would you reccommend them?

il be taping larger shows and also tape a local jamband where i can set up anywhere id like to tape

would i be better off with the ck91 or ck93 caps?

this will be my first venture into anything besides patching

yes I do recommend them. However, it depends on how much they want for them and if they come with power supplies and/or what you plan on running them with. Give me more details and I'd be happy to expound...

As for hypers v. cards that's a tough one for me. I ran the cards with the bluelines and really liked them, now however I pretty much exclusively run hypers with the neumann's and really prefer them.

For larger shows where you are running from the section you'll want hypers about 90% of the time (maybe more). For smaller stuff it just depends on how the room sounds and is set up. Sorry I can't give you a more concrete answer but it is really a trust your ears thing. I'm sold on hypers most of the time but there are definitely spots were cards would be nice. Ultimatley though I would get hypers now and add cards later.

Either way you are getting your hands on a pair of decent mics and using them and learning from them. That's what really matters... practice, practice, practice...

yeeeshhh that's tough. I sold mine to Nick a few months back for $400 with the b-18 power supplies. Check the archives on the Oade for sale board but I would say probably around $600 for both sets of caps plus those mic cables, maybe a little more since they are Audio Tragic's.

See if you can get them without the mic cables, it would be cheaper and you can put that cable money into a power supply or preamp.

600 sounds fair

what kind of a pre you reccommend for these mics

would i get buy with like a ps-2 untill i can upgrade?

what would you think about the 391's > ps-2 > straight into my M1 for the time being?

Definately get the hyper caps if you can.  I personally have never heard a good 391 tape, but I am sure they are out there.  And skip the cables and put money into a pre first!  Also, I don't have an answer...but what other mics in thise price range have you been looking at?  Also, since you seem to be on a mic search here, try listening before buying, only your ears can tell you what you like or dislike.  That said, have fun...and always look for the best deal!

My 2 cents

i like the sound of tapes made with the 391's that ive heard

ive been on the lookout for mics for awhile now, but just havent made my mind up, i havent really been looking for any other mics basically the akg's with the 91 or 93 caps

was thinking of buying new and decided i dont ahve the funds for that

what other mics in this price range should i check out. say <600$ with hypers

D - shoot me a line and I'll set you up with two good 391 tapes that I made. 6/30/01 El Buho with Gordon and 7/21/01 Trey with Medeski...

The kicker would be the hyper requirement.  Thus, I would say OKtava's would be the only other thing close.  Or maybe AKG 3000's.  Check it out and let us know what you find.  Now if you didn't want hypers, I know a ton of good mics...adk's, mbho's etc.

For 400, I see akg 391's on ebay quite often,  brand new!

i dont neccessarily need the hypers... but

probably 75-80% of my recording will be done very close to the stage here locally on a band i help out spreading the sound

i havent really gotten and super recordings of them so far with what ive tryed, i tryed running a behringer mixer > M1 but it really isnt that great IMO

so would the hypers be better for me

they play outside 90% of the time where i coule be 15-20 ft from the stage center

what would your guys reccomandations be for that kind of a taping setup

it is alsmost spring and i need to get something going before they start playing alot since im the only taper so far untill jkoso from phishhook gets his schoeps rig up here the first time they play

any help much appreciated

im looking to spend 4-500 on mics so i can have some cash leftover for a good pre

also, im allready own a M1
