Beyerdynamic MV50 Mods and possibilities
« on: June 25, 2013, 02:53:31 PM »
As I'm having to hold on off on getting a tinybox I picked up an MV50 in the meantime to mess around with, the sound of it is actually quite nice, however when I used with a pair of MC930's and picking acoustic guitar from 3 feet away the inputs were distorting, the level on my m10 was attenuated, around 3.5 for a good level, so all in all pretty useless!

Only one solution I opened it up and located the gain setting resistors, the unit from what I can gather was set to +60db  :o a bit too crazy, so put in some trim pots in series temporary measure as pictured, dialed in 103r on the pots + the 47r of the original gain resistors to get +50db had less hiss and no distortion of the lower frequency notes on the guitar.

but this would never do for live shows even with the 15db pad on the MC930's, still be at +35, now there sockets where the resistors were so I can still mess with it until I decide what to do, its now at +25db and I'm not entirely sure but I think the line in switch is +4 so that gives me some options.

Was thinking about installing a DPDT, dual on/off/on switch with some parallel resistors for +10 +20 and +50 as I liked the +50 for quiet acoustic stuff in the house.

Anyway I hope this is useful to someone and any thoughts on other mods or swapping chips? as they are all in sockets  8) has the Burr Brown INA118's installed seems pretty decent, just terrible gain structure, also the headphone amp overloads when you turn it up so that could be another mod.

Tinyboxes are CHEAP IMO, and you could've saved the $$ from this and bought a TB ;)

I would say just save up and buy a TB as soon as you can. Just remember, build times are around 6 weeks right now, if I'm correct ;) Still worth the wait IMO 8)
