Pulling My DR-70D out of storage for some 4 track work this weekend.

Do you guys usually set the internal Gains to L or M ? Will be using it at 2 outdoor shows, set at M for now......it's been awhile with this guy.

Definitely L if you are recording anything loud, or stay at the lower range of M. Avoid H as it starts to get very noisy.
I am hitting my head against the walls, but the walls are giving way.

Makes Sense, I can always amplify in audacity afterwards if needed. Thanks!

That is the stereo file if you are running one channel. For example, if just channel 3 is in use and it is set to stereo it will make a blank on channel 4. I just delete in the DAW and pan the channel that recorded to center.

Got it, so set the channels to mono so L/R create a natural stereo.  Appreciate the help :coolguy:

Tascam released a new SUPPORTED MEDIA list for the DR-70D in August 2021!
The latest additions are marked with this foul note:
*1: The performace of the media may be degraded significantly if it will be used repeatedly. ERASE FORMAT by DR-70D is recommended before use

"Foul"? I call it informative.

All flash media degrades over time with use, particularly if you only do a "quick" format. That doesn't erase or overwrite the data, nor does it check for bad sectors. This is not device-specific.

https://www.partitionwizard.com/disk-recovery/quick-format-vs-full-format.html

Doing a periodic full/erase format is mandatory practice for any flash media in my book.

Ooh, you are 100% correct. I misplaced the adjective!

I'm hoping somebody here might be able to help me with a fault in my Tascam DR70D recorder. I'm guessing it's quite a rare problem, as I haven't been able to find it discussed in other Tascam or Gearspace forums, although I haven't checked the entirety of this forum (but a search hasn't exposed it) ?

The slim Power on/Hold slide switch on my unit has suddenly lost the spring return capability .....so it is now just loose in its movement track, and therefore I'm unable to power up the unit.... as I can't hold the switch down (against the usual Spring resistance) for the required few seconds.

I've removed the lower base cover plate, closest to the switch, but the visibility is poor close to the switch, and I can't see (nor guess at) how this spring mechanism might operate: whether it's a leaf or coil spring for example ?  There was no loose spring to be seen at all.

Does anyone have familiarity with how this switch operates, and thus any suggestions of how I should tackle this fix ?

I've been able to remove the sliding finger grip from its movement track, but there's no sign of any Spring mechanism for it to work against.

The recorder was working fine prior to this, and I don't want to discard it if there's a possible repair I can make.

Thank you for any advice you might have (or any source for pursuing additional information)... with much appreciation !

I ordered the DR-70D a week ago and spent the time awaiting its delivery reading all 8 parts of this thread.  I feel like I went through all the ups and downs since its release along with everyone here, just time-shifted.  Glad to hear it sounds like FW issues are sorted and can't wait to start rolling.

The outer slider that is now loose has a fork on the inside that engages a spring-loaded slide switch that is soldered to the circuit board. My guess is either the fork has broken, or slipped off of the switch tang, or the switch tang itself has broken off. Clearly you want the issue to be with the outer slider, as a switch replacement will be an involved repair. When these units are disassembled, care has to be taken to engage the outer slider with the switch tang during reassembly. TASCAM uses this setup for many of its recorder models.

I am sorry if this question has been asked but I have read here and through the manual and not found an answer.

When using the DR-70D with the channels set to line level where is the 0 DB mark for the input knobs? My preamps don't have very quantifiable level meters so I am guessing somewhere around 3 o'clock on the deck?

Thanks for the help

From the FAQ, the estimated gain ranges are:

Gain Pot Ranges:

               1.01 Firmware            1.10+ Firmware

LOW          -21 to +11 dB                -7 to +21 dB
MID               N/A                          +16 to +36 dB
HIGH        +19 to +51 dB             +31 to +51 dB
HIGH+      +31 to +63 dB             +43 to +63 dB

I used to run it at around 10-11, I think? Just a little past where the knob turns on the channel (if I remember correctly 9 o'clock). 3 o'clock you are probably adding 10db or so of gain in the latest firmware.

I'm talking about line level not mic level... Is it the same as low perhaps? Sure doesn't seem to be that way when in use
