New Release - Fiio X5 3rd gen
« on: February 17, 2017, 06:11:17 PM »
This player looks very promising! I have been wanting to upgrade from my iPod classic for years but have never found the right portable player. The 3rd gen X5 might be the one! It has bluetooth, touchscreen, and 500GB SD storage + 32 GB internal. Paired with a A5 might be the perfect portable rig for all occasions. Looking forward to the release and reviews.

Lots of chat over on the Head-Fi forums.  There are several X5 III's out in the wild now on a "review tour" and the initial impressions have been coming in. >

If you're in the mood for a lot of reading, here are the discussion and review tour threads. >

They're available in Asia and just starting to be released in Europe and the UK.  Guessing it will be stateside sometime in the spring?

With the 3rd gen hitting stores in 10 days, there are major discounts to be had on the 2nd gen.  B&H is running a deal today, $180 until midnight. :o >

No worries.  Can't recall exactly what the difference is, but they are different somehow.

FWIW, Massdrop has the 2nd gen X3 for $147 with shipping for the next several days.  Best price I've seen yet for that model.

Just love the massive storage of the new player and Bluetooth for the car and touchscreen are huge. Gonna wait and see on a price drop. Maybe.

I know many have had great success with Fiio but i have to say the x1 2nd gen is a disaster. They still dont have gapless playback fixed. and they have had like 5 firmware releases. So just a bit of buyer beware with the newer gens i guess. I grabbed the x1 because i thought they had gapless. I can deal with all the other bugs but this bug has me wanting to just dump the thing.

support said future firmware release should fix it but its been a while now. Also not sure if the same on the higher end models but the x1 2nd gen does not read etree conventions. so gd1985-10-06d1t01 would be followed by gd1985-10-06d2t01, d1t02, d2t02

i was told this is to keep the device stable and that it only reads first few characters which must be bs by the way they playback , so they said to rename, i did that. still doesnt playback correctly.

I think the thing sounds awesome but the bugs are getting to be a real PITA

Thanks for the info! I am waiting on some reviews before I buy and try. Also still considering modding my old iPod Classic too. Decisions, decisions...

^^^  Sorry to hear your player is busting your hump, kindms.  Can't speak for other models and generations, but I have a 2nd gen X5 that's been very good to me so far.  No issue with gapless playback, and it reads etree conventional naming without a problem - plays them in proper order and doesn't hiccup on any "odd" characters that I've used (slashes, semicolons, ampersands, etc).

After being conditioned by years of iPod use, I've noticed that the FiiO DAPs definitely have their idiosyncrasies and the interface isn't as slick and intuitive as the Apple products, but the additional functionality and sound quality are leaps ahead, IMHO.

I finally grabbed a FIIO X5 3rd gen and think it's amazing esp the Bluetooth feature which locks in...never any static etc. I'd be interested in any experiences or stuff you find out about or accessories for this unit.

Love mine...my only recommendation is to be sure to purchase quality mini-sd cards. I tried some cheaper ones and replaced immediately. Worked perfectly since

Thanks Walt. Yeah the 11 dollar no name 256 gb card was tempting but opting instead for Sandisk 256 for 62 bucks.

Since this thread has been resurrected and the players have been out in the field for a while, thought I'd ask about it.  I've read a number of reviews complaining that the 3rd gen is slow, the software is buggy, stops working after a few months, etc.  Seems like people either get a good device or one plagued with issues.  Anybody here been saddled with a problematic one?  Any particular quirks (other than needing quality cards) or issues?

FWIW, my 2nd gen X5 is still going strong after a few years, knock on wood.

no issues at all.
