Advice for taping stadium rock shows
« on: April 30, 2017, 03:34:25 PM »
Hi

Complete noob here, so apologies if this has been asked before elsewhere. Just looking some advice On where to stand while recording a stadium rock show? As I have only ever taped arena shows from the seated sections
I'll be running either CA Cafs or SP - cmc 20s with battery boxAnd the recorder is a zoom h1! I know both mics have different pic up patterns etc but I suppose my question is Do I stand close to the PA stacks? Or do I find the "sweet spot" between stage and mixing desk? Again apologies if this has been asked Elsewhere

Any advice be greatly appreciated

My advice: Get close to the PA and and aim your mics at it.  Get the most direct sound you can.

If I can pull it off, I go dfc in the sweet spot.  If that isn't feasible go for the stacks.

Cardioids in the sweet spot.

Omnis at the stacks if you are really close...like earplugs close...otherwise, cardioids there too to avoid the mushy reverberation of rock music in a space like that.

Thank folks for the advice, I now have a clearer idea of where I should be situated at stadium gigs! Obviously the closer to the stacks the more bass roll off I will need also?

Bass roll-off is an iffy thing. If the bass doesn't brickwall your recorder, it's better to record the whole thing and roll it off afterward. I know CAFS do not pick up a lot of bass, and CMC-20, according to specs--wow, they're just $50 US now!--

roll off under 70. Since the mics are not bassy, you probably don't have to do anything else.

Or roll off the bass and increase the gain to compensate. Same difference, in terms of the amount of data you gather.

Either way, you're probably going to have to do some EQ in post.
