That is cool as hell, and I can't wait to hear this.

Do you think NASA takes B&P requests?

That's really awesome.  Hello, marketing dream come true!

Some of the other classical orchestral recording types I talk to bemoan the fact that B&K no longer makes the capsules for DPA mics, even though B&K still exists as a separate company making measurement mics.

I imagine some of them reading the part on that page about Apollo 13 and getting indiginant:
"The original B&K 4006 is SO much more refined!  The modern DPA version is vastly inferior!"
"Surface mount components sound terrible!"
I am hitting my head against the walls, but the walls are giving way.

I would like to hear the tapes!  I hope NASA posts them somewhere for the public.  I also wonder if they will bring the mics back if they do the (planned) sample recovery mission.

You might find them later in the Yard Sale (as "gently used" or "well travelled").

Other nations' space programs overheard asking if they can patch out.

Wonder which recording app they chose to use on the Rover's Iphone.  :P

Seriously though, pretty cool that standard DPA gear including a D:vice is being used for this. I'm only left wishing NASA had required and was able to convince DPA to build a 5 channel D:vice variant.

I bet there was one engineer complaining DPA were elitist mics and the iPhone internal mic would make almost as good a recording and would save money.

Bob Katz's 2001 Space Shuttle launch audio recording made at the Kennedy Space Center VIP viewing site 3.1 miles from the launchpad using a pair of DPA 4041 spaced 6' (also makes available a 4 channel surround version using a Sennheiser MKH-30 placed coincident with each 4041 forming two spaced M/S pairs).

"[snip]..to do justice to the experience, you will need a low-distortion subwoofer system capable of producing up to ~119 dB SPL on peaks at 25 Hz and ~116 dB SPL at 16 Hz and below! If not, then you will not be able to feel the chest-thumping, clean solid bottom that is produced. Ironically, the shuttle liftoff from the VIP site is “just loud enough” in person, a pleasant and not ear-damaging experience. Think of it as an 8.3 GWatt amplifier/loudspeaker with zero percent distortion and response down to DC! Running at say, 40% efficiency, that would take 20 thousand megawatts from the breaker box! Those figures are calculated by Dick Pierce from the comparable Saturn 5 moon rocket [snip] at 0 foot distance. [snip]

^ lol

The capsules have an operating spec down to a low of -40deg C, while the D:vice only goes down to 0deg C. My guess is the D:vice will be stored more “internally” within the rover than the mics and recordings will only be made during daylight hours where the temperature is within spec for both. I wonder how exposed the capsules will actually be to surrounding atmosphere.

Just found this-  https://youtu.be/2aCOyOvOw5c
Riding the Booster with enhanced sound

Quote
" From the upcoming Special Edition Ascent: Commemorating Space Shuttle DVD/BluRay by NASA/Glenn a movie from the point of view of the Solid Rocket Booster with sound mixing and enhancement done by the folks at Skywalker Sound. The sound is all from the camera microphones and not fake or replaced with foley artist sound."

Wow. Full ride from launch to splash-down with actual sound and video.  Fascinating!
