Best mic deployment for bluegrass matrix recording?
« on: July 30, 2019, 06:40:04 PM »
I've been asked to record a bluegrass show at a brew pub, and can set up however I like.

It's a medium sized room with 6 parallel surfaces. Mixpre-6 will allow me to record SBD and 2 mic pairs. Have MK4 pair, can borrow another, and likely access to a pair of hypercardiods.

PA is pretty small, Mackie gear.

In addition to SBD, thinking to run MK4's ortf at stage lip, and the other pair outside and behind the stacks, facing the crowd, for ambience.
Or should I hang mics (cards or hypers) over the sweet spot?
Or an entirely different deployment?

TIA,
Chris

My go to 6 channel setup in most cases is set of cards at center stage lip (or onstage) with split omnis on each side which also help pickup more room ambiance and will give you a lot more low end when mixed with the sbd

It depends on what kind of bluegrass you're recording. Del McCoury? Stage lip. Billy Strings? Sweet Spot.

I just recorded Circus No. 9 doing sbd plus spaced omnis ~6 feet from stage. It turned out very well. You have to know your audience.
Mics: mk4v/mk41v/mk22 > CMC1L/Nbobs, 4061, MKE2
Preamps: Mixpre-D, Nbox Platinum ABS
Recorders: Mixpre-6 ii, PCM-A10
