well, i put mine to test 20volts DC, because there isnt a 10v setting, and make sure its on DC voltage :)

Any DC voltage setting just above what you intend to measure will work.  If the DVM display reads over, then select the next higher setting.  If you set it too high, you won't hurt anything but you lose reading precision.  If you are using an analog meter and the needle is at either extreme, you need to adjust the range selection accordingly, then just read the appropriate scale.
