Can the MOTU Traveler run without connection to a Mac/PC?

Yes...you can program the Traveler to work without a computer; and it can be powered by a 12v battery (it has a standard 4-pin XLR jack). Because of the way the control knobs operate, I think it would probably be best to do your intial setup with a computer (output channel assignments, bit rates, etc) with a computer and then just to volume changes on the Traveler's front panel.
That all being said, if you're thinking of using the Traveler to do a matrix on the fly without a laptop...well, it certainly is capable; but I think it would be a bit of pain to do it without some sort of controller, such as a laptop or DAW.
I just got an Email back from the MOTU modder (Matt, Black Lion Audio) and he said some things. First, the MOTU operates at +/-9V internally. This is better than +/-5V of the UA5, but not as good as the +/-15V of the Presonus Firepod/box. Also, he believes mics go directly into Opamps. There is no transistor front-end like the Presonus.
I'd like to compare Presonus to MOTU, but obviously I don't have both. It is too bad the MOTU does not sound better "stock" though. I love the features (manual controls, standalone routing, level meters) on this thing!
