Thanks man!  I'm currently using my Yamaha receiver's phono preamp (model# RX-V493).  It sounds pretty good, but I'm having some tracking issues with the stylus due to the design of the Rega in terms of vibration and possibly tracking force.  I intend on ordering a new belt and dust cover since the cover on this one is a bit beat up.  Looks like i'll have to wall mount the Rega too because its ultra sensitive to vibrations.  I already have a shure tracking force guage ordered.

Nice looking setup Gloco.  Looks like you have a pretty nice headphone on the rack under the turntable  :)

excellent!

hehe, that's my Baby Orpheus just so you don't confuse it with that HD-650    >:D

Thanks Tim  ;)

edit:  I'm currently listening to Madonna's Confessions on a Dance floor vinyl (don't laugh, I really love this album), nice sound and the facker hasn't skipped once...so far.  Although, there's definitely some sibilence there.

I knew it was the Baby O, it isn't shiny enough to be a HD-650.  :)

I agree with you on Confessions, I'm not usually a fan of Madonna's stuff but that album is actually pretty good.

you should consider a real outboard phono pre.  you'll be amazed at what it can do for your system.  think about it as going line in on a d8 vs buying a pre.

I'll definitely consider it.  I know the Yamaha is on its way out once I purchase some speakers for a HT setup, I'm thinking epos as my speaker brand and probably a denon receiver.  A phono preamp may also be in the works as well as a wall mount for the TT to avoid vibrations.

Nick, if you've never heard the Baby O, you must do so, it's a killer headphone.    :o

watch out on the Denon receivers - my Denon (AVR-683, I believe) has no phono stage... but ymmv
Tickets are dead to me.  Except the ones I have, don't have, and lost.  Not to mention the ones you have, don't have, and lost.   And the ones that other dude has, doesn't have, and lost.  Let me know if you need some tickets, I'm happy to oblige.

Ay yes, thanks for the tip.  It's something I gotta keep in mind for sure.  Say, how does a phono preamp plug into a receiver?  I'm assuming there has to be a set of ports specifically for an outboard preamp.

an educated guess:  the pre can go into any aux input.  Because the Denon had no phono stage, I purchased one of those really cheap turntables from Circuit City (either AT or Sony) for like $99... they both have built in pres that you turn on under the platter.  When you turned that on, you plugged it into whatever input you wanted to use (aux, whatever).  I'd imagine that its the same way with an outboard pre.

it is the same...

the phono stage plugs into the receiver just as any other source. the phono stage typically adds between 30 - 60 db of gain to the phono signal (bringing the signal to line level)...

phono > phonostage(preamp) > receiver

phono > phonostage(preamp) > receiver

it does more than that.  there is an RIAA eq curve for records that it matches as well.
