Title: Bit Bucket w/ AES-EBU?
Post by: gormenghast on March 14, 2019, 08:04:51 PM
Is there such a thing and affordable?

My old MacBook unibody has an optical input but the thing is about to die, so I'm looking for another bit bucket for dat transfers.  I'm using a Sony D10ProII as my playback deck that has a proprietary digital cable that has AES-EBU output.  I'm also using a Hosa converter box converting the AES to optical spdif.

I might buy a Marantz deck with coax digital input and another Hosa converter from AES to SPDIF coax.

What are some other options.

lectrosonics SPDR takes AES

"affordable" is relative, i suppose

any mac optical input ive ever seen resamples all data and isnt suitable for bit-accurate work, fwiw

usually any spdif input can take AES if you use a 110:75 ohm transformer. you want the red one. ive used this on several devices successfully

I wasn't aware that the MacBook resamples or I wouldn't use it.

Affordable would be the combo of another Hosa box and a used Marantz deck with the coax input, to me anyway.

The adapter you shared looks like what I need, so the next step is to find a BNC>RCA digital cable ( or a BNC>RCA adapter--I have a coax cable with RCA's ), and the Marantz deck.  Does it matter which deck as long as it has the coax input?

Looks like the Fostex FR-2 has an AES input.

Or can you use any deck that has an optical input??

The AES > SPDIF transformer adapter plus a SPDIF input deck is the easiest and cheapest way to go IMO.

You can get a PMD 660 for a song nowadays for doing 16 bit transfers from DAT.

I picked up a first generation Sound Devices USB Pre (the 1.5 version) for under $100 on Reverb for DAT transfers via SPDIF to my Win7 laptop. People are letting them go cheap since they think they only work on 32 bit systems but there is a free driver that makes it work with 64 bit. Mines been rock solid so far. This plus an inexpensive used/borrowed laptop could be just as cheap as getting a new deck .

Out of my budget. If it was around $200 I would do it.

I don't think the 660 has digital input but maybe the 670?  Any thoughts on this deck?

The Marantz 661 has coax digital input $350 at B and H.  The Marantz 561 also have coax digital input $250 on Amazon.

If the 661 or 661 mkII will work for your needs, grab one of those.  Great deck for field recording also!

I’m using a Microtrack II 2496 for DAT transfers and it works nicely for the price of $80.

Put a ISO on YS.

Sorry was typing too fast. The 670 has coax digi in at 16 bit.  The 671 is 24 bit. The 661 also has a SPDIF coax input.

I bought a 670 many years ago to use with my V3 and it worked like a champ.

There's a couple of used 661s on Reverb right now from $229 and up.
