what is wrong with this wave form??
« on: November 25, 2009, 11:28:57 AM »
edit:  never did figure this out but scroll down for a new one!

this is buff's master from a few years ago.  he sent me the cowboy junkies sets (early and late) to transfer/seed.  they were fine.  the early opener set was fine except there are cuts but the wave form looks fine.  this is the late show opener.  sounds just fine but wtf?  the whole right channel looks like this.

I have a really weird one also where it looks unbalanced off the y-axis. Thanks for reminding me to post a sample at some point to get comments from the peanut gallery.

Awesome. David said you were like The Wolf in Pulp Fiction. Shows up just in time with tons of gear, does a pro job, and disappears into the night! :-)

here's mine from last night.  sounds just fine.   I was clamped to a rafter so nuemann ak40's > lc3 > km100 > two long runs of xlr > interconnects > v3.  I've used the same long run of cable many times (it stays there in the rafters).  again it sounds just fine.  no dc offset either.  the first is during house music and tuning from the band.  second is during music.

Weird stuff.  I get something like that but I assume it's from my excessive fake fur to shield from wind.  Some sort of drifting DC offset of sorts.  It could be something hardware IMO, at the mic.  Vibrations in the floor affecting what the mic records.  Shock mounts might help, or NOT.  It doesn't appear to affect the sound of the file in my instance either, but it is damn weird to sync another track (camcorder) to.  My cheapie electrets did something like that until I got a battery box for it.  Might be unstable phantom power or something.  Could be lots of things, just guessing until it's accounted for.

Try reproducing the results in front of your stereo at home.  Label all equipment, then switch sides with them:  run red mic, cable, preamp on left and run blue mic, cable, preamp on left.  If you get same issue, you know its your rig.  Now swap mics, so that red mic is on blue cable and bleu preamp.  Did the problem switch sides???

If you didn't get the issue, then it isn't your rig.  Or if the issue persists only in one channel, it may be your V3 or input on your deck.  Or if you can't replicate the issue, it may be the cables you got running through the rafters...  Time and heat and beer/sweat/stink...

BTW, I sent you a PM about some ARU vids...

I guess I should add that in my case, I see that only when adding 10dB or more of digital gain (to the resultant WAV) in post.  Not really that that, but something like that.

regarding the second wavefile (the first wasn't mine) I'm now 99% it was from the fan cranked near the mics.  couldn't reproduce it at home and with the headphones on I could hear a slight "rumble" of wind noise.
