Church Audio 11's vs 14's?
« on: August 04, 2011, 11:16:57 PM »
Hi ... simply, what are the differences between these two models?  Are they both available as cardioids? and, are they any smaller/lighter than SP-CMC4us (AT853's)? thanks.

Quoting Chris from CA...the new CA 11 are the same quality then the CA 14 just lacking a bit of bass...The CA 11 is the same size in diameter that the AT 853 (12 Millimeter) but is IMO a bit longer.

The CA 14 is larger than the CA 11 or the 853.  I own all three (CA 11 The old modell)and have to dadmitt that I love my CA 14 cards...pulled some good recorings lately.  Had problems with the 853's missing the 4.7 Ohm modification.

I don't have any experience with the CA-14 and only taped one show with CA-11s, so I can't speak to the sonic differences between the two, but I would add that the CA-14 has a non-removable screen protector and only a cardioid configuration, whereas the CA-11 can interchange between cardioid and omni capsules.

I've pulled a number of shows with CA-11's and have been very happy with the results.  I've also heard some great pulls with the CA-14's.  I do like the CA-11's option of being able to change the caps (card/omni) and they are a little smaller than the -14's which, as su6oxone pointed out, have non-removable windscreens.

The CA-14 comes in Omni, Card, And a more tighter card configuration upon request.

thanks Chris and others for the replies and info. Sounds like the 14's will suit me. I have stealth questions but i won't post those here.

Ran my CA14's for the 2nd time at an oldies band, and I must say, I think it sounds better than my last MBHOHyper>LB source I did of the same band. The CA14's just SMOKE, everything about them was better :)

I've have owned both CA11 omni and cards and CA14 Omni and cards.

For the price they both are very good. The CA11 produce a nice sounding recording and is very small and easy to hide.  Also can get to the venue and change capsules on the spot. A nice feature.

CA11 omni's sound very good but will pick up crowd banter. CA11's cards are nice thou I have never liked the way they sound. Almost a tiny sound to them if your not in the right spot in the venue. The CA14 cards do not have this problem and sound better in high and low end. No permanent wind screens with CA11's. Optional mount clips. CA11's - Nice to have one body with 2 capsules.

CA14 have a better frequency response then the CA11 and has slightly more high end, thou I think the bass response is where the CA14 outshine the CA11's. The size is bigger and harder to conceal. Permanent wind screens with CA14's. Optional mount clips. CA14's - Have to buy 2 sets of mics if you want both omni and cards.

I live both mics and made good pulls. When I have made a really good pull in the sweet spot with the CA14 it sounds really good.

Could always get both and sell the ones you don't like.

I use the 14s in a lot of different small venues, as well as, small bars even. They have never disappointed me yet. I sat 15 feet from a Greg Allman wanna be Hammond B3 player and had the 14 cards sitting AB only 5 inches apart on my lowpro bag strap plastic holders (attached the clips there) and the show sounded great. I gave a copy to the Hammond player 2 weeks later and he was blown away. I have also used the omnis in very crowd quiet small theatres (ampitheatre style) which hold 500 people and they captured the whole room great. IMHO both 14 cards and omnis cannot be beat at their price range. I also must say I used either a CA9100 pre or (now) a CA 9200 pre and either a R09Hr or M-10.
