So I built the battery system for my UA-5 last night and everything works great. Anybody know of a way to wire in some kind of meter to show show much juice in left in the battery(ies)?
Also, the directions say to only run one battery at a time except for the time it takes to switch them out. I emailed the guy and he said it was to keep ruining batteries if they are not the same mAH. If both my batteries are the same could/should I keep them both plug in?
I would like to build the same setup for my D7 and MD. How do I figure out what volt batteries I need?

I run mine both at the same time. The reason you wouldn't want to if they are different capacities is one will eventually start to drain, and the other will try to charge it back up! Obviously not ideal.
You run 2 RC packs, right? That should be good for at least 6-8 hours, longer than any show I've ever taped!! For festivals you'll have to recharge between sets, or buy more batts.

could you elaborate on the rc packs please. i am about to buy a ua-5 and i'll need to power it .

I had fun building mine and would be glad to make one for you. Trade for DAT blanks or something.

Check the Archival section under SIY SLA/RC Battery Pack (or something close to it).

This is battery I use. http://www.batteryspace.com/product.asp?0=278&1=280&3=209
Its nice and lasts longer than those 2 Rat Shack batteries. I used Jordan's plans for this one as well, just a different battery. 30 bucks for battery and charger, or 50 for 2 batts and charger.

hey grass...that looks pretty good. did you just make a connector to go from the end of the batt to the ua-5?
-
Yep, its got the barrell connector on one end, and the female rat shack 9.6v connector on the other end. I used the coiled cable cause it looks nicer. ;) I ran it for over 7 hours the other day/night with my oktava's and it still had juice when I shut everything down.

I built an extra cable if anyone needs it.

sure. i could use the xtra cable. THX!

Actually, somebody else already has dibs on it, but I would be glad to make another for you. Cost is 12.50. If you want to send $13, that would cover postage.

Shoot me an e-mail Joe...I just hacked a ua-5 connector off of a 2x4d cell pack that I had made for festival type shows. You can certainly have it, I have zero use for it since I run a mini-me.

so let me get this straight, I have the jordanshapiro set up with the two connectors, I can run two batteries at the same time on it if they are both fully charged and the same mAh? It won't hurt my UA-5? That's cool. Let me know if this isn't right. Thanks!

I believe if they are the same mAH you will be fine.

Well you could. But the intention fo the 2 batteries is the ability to connect one without disconnecting the other. Therefore avoiding and drop out from the change. You can run with them both but if they are both fully charged your running to much juice to the UA5. I made one when I had my UA5 and it worked great. I don't think it does any real damage just not what it was intended for. Also just as an FYI most of the RC batteries take 2 full cycles to run as long as they should. Also if your looking for the batteries or chargers check out the clearence ilse a toy's r us. I scored 3 9.6v batteries for $3.00 each. I thne found another with the charger for $10 at a target on clearence.
