My questions are , The sony minidisc has auto level and user set levels ,

I'm not sure about the mini disc settings. I recommend looking into the Sony M-10 as a new recorder. I'm happy with it as are many others here. Good luck with your first recording.

Whatever recorder you get, do not use auto level (or whatever it may be called). It will almost always sound terrible. Always set the levels manually.

As you have a battery box, it'll be better to go line-in, not mic-in.

Assuming you aren't running a stand, make sure the mics are as high on your body as you can get them (glasses/hat, etc).  Godsmack will be loud as hell, so run mics>bb>line-in.  Run your levels conservatively as you can always fix that later.  Turn all manner of auto settings to OFF.

I'd also skip the LS-10 in favor of the Sony M-10 or something similar.

for the first level check at the venue, just test it out on the first act or opening act you donĀ“t want to tape (or better just let it run, sometimes there are some nice gems as opening acts) - also good for searching for a good sounding spot for recording.

give enough headroom - a bit to low volume can be fixed in post, overloaded distorted recording not. Sometimes the main act is a bit louder
