Suggestion for Stealthable Cardioid Mics
« on: March 27, 2007, 01:54:33 PM »
Can you guys please make me a recommendation on very good Cardioid Mics (and a fitting preamp) that i could you for stealth taping.

I curretly run a pair of DPA 4060s > MMA6000 > Korg MR-1 and am very satisfied with the outcome for calm / acoustic gigs.
However if the concerts gets louder and / or the hall produces a lot of reverb for my taste the recordings turn out too bassy.
For this purpose i want to get an alternative rig at a comparable quality to my other rig.

Thanks
Jan

I would get a pair of Church's Cardiod Mics and have him mod them to terminate in microdots, so you could use them with your current rig.  It wouldn't cost you much at all....

Or you could get a pair of AT U853 card's, send them to Church for the 4.7k mod and have him put microdots on them.

Is it not an option to just run HPF in post? For seriously loud shows the 4060s can overload... I have a pair of 4061s for such occasion :)

The at853s are good, but not in the same league as the dpa406x in my opinion. (I used to run es943s, which are sonically similar to the at853s).

I run the same mics, and I'm seriously considering a pair of 402x = very nice cards, and keeping with the same dpa sound. Of course that's serious $ which I can't really afford right now. If your budget will stretch that far I'd seriously consider those.

Oh and thanks for the damo btw :)

I run my 4060s HRTF (clipped to the arms of my glasses). I can't speak for the original poster though.

I don't think the DPA4022s are going to work in that configuration.  But maybe you have a bigger head than I do.  Much, much bigger, I mean :-)

;D

You're right of course. Some sort of hat mount will be necessary. Or something. I haven't worked out the details yet. But that's ok, because I haven't bought a pair of 402x either :)

Thanks for your suggestions. Basically i clip the DPA 4060 to the collar of my hood.

The Korg is set to - 12 db and the Preamp is set as needed (usually from +4dB up to + 24dB).
And this just sounds bad for loud gigs (listed to the mentioned Damien Rice Recording. http://bt.etree.org/details.php?id=505309
i also recorded Bonnie Prince Billy the day before and this just sounds nice http://bt.etree.org/details.php?id=505106).

I don't think the DPA 402x are very stealthable? Ive never seen them in real live. But they would be a real alternative.
So the AT853 > MMA-6000 are the best alternative i could use?

The Sennheiser MKE40 are a little nicer sounding than the AT853's.

Just order a pair from Microphone Madness for $250, solder some microdot connectors on there and you are good to go....

I assume you ordered these: http://www.microphonemadness.com/products/mmhigsencars.htm

One Sennheiser MKE40 alone costs that much http://www.thomann.de/de/sennheiser_mke401053c_lavaliermikrofon.htm

Are the similar / same??

They are the same capsule.  Mic Madness machines their own body.  I have heard recordings with both the sennheiser and the mic madness versions, sounds the same to me...

I'll toss in for the Audix 1290.
larger than the mics mentioned, but still well within the low profile requirements.

My buddy Tom has made some excellent recordings with the 1290s.  They are a little bigger around than a cigarette and about the same length.
