What would you do (V3 / V2 question)
« on: December 19, 2004, 01:09:58 PM »
I currently run UA-5 (digi-MOD) and was thinking about my pre-amp and possibly steppig up in to the Grace family. anyway. I run a Laptop with a VX Pocket 440 and was wondering what you thought would be the best.

would it be better to run V3 or V2 -> XLR -> VX Pocket as the A/D or would running V3 (A/D)-> COAX -> VX Pocket. ?

And if I was to do the first choice (provided I have an optical Mod) I could the run the V3 in 16/48 or 44.1 to a JB3 and run 24/48 on the laptop correct ?

I know the V3 has better bit depth but this question is posed with the limitation of the 24/48 VX Pocket

I would guess (and bet a good chunk of change) the V3's ADC is better, but I haven't heard the VX Pocket - so I would therefore guess V3 digital-out > VX Pocket would sound better than V3 analog-out > VX Pocket.

Yes, if you run V3 analog out (XLR) > VX Pocket analog-in, you could also run V3 optical out > JB3 (or V3 coax/AES > Hosa DFC > JB3 if you don't have the optical mod).

What about dropping the vx pocket and keeping the ua-5

v2>ua-5>usb>laptop would work fine, and you could do 24/96.

Or if you got the ua-5 from Doug, just get a mod>usb>laptop

When i was debating v2 or v3 someone gave me some good advice.  A great preamp will always be good, however adc, jb3, 440, fill in the blanks will always be changing.  I can for see having the v2 for a Loooooong time.  However, everything after it will be changing regularly. What if the uber adc is in development right now?  Not to knock v3, great piece of equipment.  Great one box sollution.  Opti mod is so perfect.  V2 vs. v3 is a win win debate.

Honestly after several outings (about a year or more) with the UA-5 I started getting weird what I can only refer to as digi-noise over the USB. I had never had any issues with it before and my laptop was rock solid.

It seemed to start at Roo' I had never had any issues with it before that festival and my recordings were all f'd up. I thought it was either heat or cell phones something like that so I figured everything was OK. Then I did some other fests and shows and it was showing up again. albeit much less frequent it was still there. So I found a VX Pocket 440 on Ebay for like 100+ so I figured as an experiment I would run COAX out of the UA-5 and I am almost %100 sure that fixed the issue. Sooooo going back to USB although never caused me any trouble prior to Roo Ihaven't been able to pull a recording with out issues.

I run a Sony vaio PCG-GRS700k 1.8 P4 1GB RAM 60 GB HDD w/ WaveLab 5.0a. Could it be a buffer issue perhaps ? Any suggestions I am all ears. Also I tried to run tests in my Apt. to see if I could recreate the issue and there seems to be no ryhme or reason to the crackles. It seems to effect both channels. Also I cannot be %100 sure that going to the COAX connection has actually "solved" the problem. It has been very difficult for ME to pinoint the issue. having switched to the COAX has at the very least cut down this "issue" enough where If it is still present I am having a hell of a time hearing it.

Having said all of this I am also thinking about the T-Mod and the + Mod for my oade digi-MOD and rebuilding my laptop to see if I cannot shake these issues. UGH

go v3, that way like brian said, you could run v3>optical>jb3 and out of the analog outs on the v3>vx pocket

Thanks for all the opinions folks. After crunching the Numbers etc I think I have decided to stick it out with the UA-5 a little bit longer. I am gonna send it to Doug and get the T-Mod and the +MOD. I figure if I am unhappy with it or want something new to play with it will fetch a better resale value then a straight up Digi-MOD.

I figure with the $ I save I can send the 460's to Jim Williams finally and get the UA-5 upgraded. Maybe also a set of ck-63's

I think it will make my wallet and ears happy for a little while

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I think I remember hearing the VX Pocket not playing nicely with phantom powered mics. I seem to remember hearing it can damage the card.

There is no phantom power present in the VX pocket so not sure how that would occur ?
