Hey now,
Just picked up a pair of mk22 caps. I figured I’d run them in DIN, cause I’m not a huge ortf fan, but figured I’d ask here and see if anyone else has a technique with these mics that they love. They’ll be used in small clubs and theatres, and up front at phish gigs.

While it all depends on what sort of stereo image you're trying to capture, with those open cards you could try NOS. That's what I'm trying with my Line Audio CM3s, which are wider than a normal card.

+1 for NOS....that is how I run mine!

The stereo bar that Schoeps offers for MK 22 capsules sets 21 cm spacing between the membranes, with the same 110° angle as ORTF.
I've used that stereo bar dozens of times and find that it works well.

I have been playing around with the configuration for some similar mics (4015s). 40 cm and 90 degrees results in an SRA pretty close to NOS...

But from farther back, I'd increase the spacing and try a narrower angle to more like 31cm/70° . Like this: http://bt.etree.org/details.php?id=596986

I do something a lot like this with my MBHO subcards and did the same with the AK43s. Without the larger spread and time arrival difference they tend to sound kind of mono.

Your detailed PAS theory has really changed how I go about taping, and I think my tapes have never been better.
I can't recommend the shapeways bars enough. Any angle. Any spacing.

Thanks Noah. Really good to hear it's working well for you. I've really liked what I've heard in your mk22 recordings, consistently.
Although I tend to get excited about multichannel OMT and post a lot about that and the thinking behind it around here, it's more arcane, complex, and not as applicable to how most tapers operate. By contrast the Optimized PAS approach is far more universally applicable, with a certain grace and beauty in its applied simplicity. I feel it's the most appropriate stereo technique for the majority of audience-perspective taping, and personally consider it the most important contribution I've made here at TS.
