Jb3 Car adaptor ?
« on: May 09, 2004, 01:02:38 PM »
I am looking into going this route and then using the  and was wondering if anyone knows of another Jb3 car adaptor , as Creative shows to be out of stock

so I have been searching far and wide for another 5v output car adaptor. (there kinda hard to find as Most were 4.5,6,9,12v)

I found this http://www.semsons.com/pdaplugincha.html

and was wondering if there would be any problem with snipping of the adaptor plug and adding a Rat shack version.
this will not change the output Voltage correct?

The only thing I'd wonder about is the mA output....I'm not sure what the JB3 needs for current off the top of my head.

As for your question about snipping the plug off....you'll be fine.  The circuitry that converts the 12->5v is in the cig adapter end.

I thought I understood it as the Ua5 and Jb3 current draw was 450Ma . But it reached a higer draw for Hd spin up and so forth
that's why I was a bit confused to as if this would be enogh steady current .

I was also calculating my battery times on a 450ma figure aswell

Verified that 4.5 V works perfectly fine too.  I am using a wallmart one which I think is like 15 bucks.  The nice thing about it is the car adapter and the converter are seperate pieces so you can just snip off the cord easily to remove the car piece(just like the official car kit from Creative Labs is like).

also, the 15 dollar adapter at wal-mart has a rating of 1000mah, not 500mah

I'm using the wally world version... it works fine.  Just make sure you keep the switch in the 4.5v location... if you bump it it moves.  I put a drop of epoxy on mine.  Also,  my testing with 2 @ 3Ah 9.6v rc batts proved to be far less than fozzy's 7.2Ah 12v sla set up.  The only difference between the two set ups other than the batts is the adaptors, so the wm version may waste some juice... not sure.

well, at 46 hrs on a 12v sla, i guess i could afford to waste a lil energy

if it could go at least 30 hrs, i would be very happy

I did find a couple for other unit's such as these two

I had a hard time finding them too but I did eventually(almost gave up but found it just before I was about to leave).   Not listed on their website so that sucks.   Here is a link to some dude's page that has a nice picture of it:
http://k0swi.microlnk.com/REVIEW/PS/POWER%20QWEST%20Digital%202000mAH%20Universal%20Car-Cord%20Adapter.htm

Mine is actually rated at 2000 Ma so that makes me feel nice and safe the JB3 won't ever draw close to that high of an amount.  And it does indeed come with the correct plug that fits into the JB3 on top of it.

Oh wait, here is their offical website where it is listed(part# 0900-21):

Don't worry about the 4.5 V...the JB3 is pretty picky about voltage and would freeze up immediately if it didn't like it ;p
Plus look at the batteries you put into the JB3 internally...they are rated at 3.6 V(get up to like 4.2 V or something when fully charged).
