Best Shockmounts/Clips for SDC's under $50
« on: March 15, 2012, 10:31:07 PM »
BHphotovideo website is overwhelming, so I thought I would ask for some input.  I don't want to spend more than $50 for a single mount/clip (preferably $25 if it is quality and not paying for a name).  I use Neumann KM184's.

Thanks!

I would contact Busman.  I think he sells his for about $35.  He has both 20mm and 22mm versions.  They work great for me.

Seconded.  I got my first pair for $40 about a year ago, not sure if prices have gone up.

edit) nevermind, i found his website.

I would go for that one, but kinda liking these smaller clips for carrying around...  my Audio Technica mounts require alot of attention/care when taking them in the field.

Here are some AKG 460's in them...  I think they are 21 or 22 mm.

+1

If the objective is reducing bump sound as it hits your mics, I think the rycote's nearest competition is the shure donut. There was a magazine that did a comparison a while ago (and I've repeated it at home) and I think both work well with the rycote invision line being the top spot. My rycote is my daily driver since I really think it is an excellent mount and I keep a donut handy in case I had to really reduce the visual footprint.

I've assaulted mine before and it just keeps right on going. Periodically I tighten the screws on it, but thats it. You get what you pay for IMHO.

I don't treat mine gingerly - they are pretty durable.

These were my first mounts.  Okay and servicable.  Certainly flexible to use with many different mics - used mine with both CA-11's and Octava MK-012's.  The Busmans are a better fit for me and not much more.

Picked up some KAM i3s in the Yard Sale, 22mm. I've considered the Busman mounts, will email him.

The best shockmounts for SDCs are, without doubt, the Rycote InVision series - just £30 each in the UK.  There use the patented "Lyre" mount that is extremely effective and is rugged and unbreakable.

The only others that come close are the Cinela Osix at a higher price and the Shure donut mount.

Personally, I have now moved over to the Rycote series of mounts for all my microphones.

THIS pdf makes good reading - "Keeping Microphones Quiet".

Got a Pair of these for $15 using the make an offer option:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/290447633395?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649
I have since put a little beefier O-ring on it and it supports a set of Nak 300's with ease now.  It worked ok with the stock rubbers but had a tiny bit of sag with a set of Zaolla cables on the mics.
