Shure SM57 ??
« on: March 27, 2003, 12:28:29 PM »
Are these mic any good. They are running 145$ a pair. I am looking at getting starter some mics for under 500$ to record some small shows. I will just patch at bigger shows. No need in running my 1000$ rig when 15 folks have over 10K in theirs.
Eventually i want to upgrade to some good mics/amps.
Will these shure mics be alright for bars and small venue shows. I may have a chance at getting some akg 1000's (240$) also. Which would be better?

The sm series is most certainly manufactured for vocal mics, and as such, is a horrible choice for concert recording.  I would save my money and patch if I were you until you can get something better.  I guess earthworks might be in your price range!

But other than Tom Petty who the hell uses 57s for vocals!? It cracks me up everytime I see him singing into that thing. When I worked with a band and we had guest vocalists sometimes we had to "Give them the Petty"... poor bastards would be singing into a 57 for the night  :D

better than the "rubber cowbell" though..  ;)

I see a lot of neumann kms105's I think it is now.  Popper uses an sm58 for his harp...which tells you why it sounds like shit on most occassions I have seen Blues Traveler.

I'd use a 57 on the harp before a 58, I think EV makes a nice mic for harps. and yes those are the 105's that you see *everywhere* now...

anybody know what those vocal mics are the dead have in the View From the Vault series?

A while ago I actually called Shure to find out what the difference is between a 57 & a 58. They told me that the electronics are identical but the shape of the windscreen and body are taylored towards the application. 57 body for clips, 58 for hands, 57 head for instrument (or other non popping/proximity source) 58 has more windscreen for handling wind noise and the PP factor, as well as ESSSSS. So 57 stands, 58 hands.

Here are some 57's at work with Phatty screens!

Here's a 58 bieng totally abused!
