Connecting Marantz 661 and Sound Devices 302
« on: February 01, 2013, 04:04:57 PM »
Hello
I bought a new sound devices 302 today and I was wondering on how I may go about connecting it to my Marantz 661?
I've heard of the AES->SPDIF cable and inquired about that but in the meantime I tried connecting

the mic to 302 via xlr and 302 to marantz via xlr but I get a high pitch sound.
the attenuation setting on the marantz is -18

thank you for the help!

Sound Devices 302 does not have an AES output.

The optimal way to run a 302 into a PMD661 is to set the 302 outputs to line level and switch the PMD661's XLR input to line level instead of mic level.

I'll add that you'll benefit from running the RCA outputs of the PMD661 into the Tape Return of the SD302.  This will allow recorder playback & confidence record monitoring through the SD302 which has a much better headphone amp that them PMD661.

ohh ok so grab some rca cables and plug them from 661 to 302 then?

I'm suggesting XLR to XLR line level cables and L/R RCA to 3.5mm TRS.

Plug the microphones into the XLR inputs of the SD302.  Plug the XLR line level outputs of the SD302 to the XLR inputs of the PMD661 (set this to line level not mic level).

Then plug the L/R RCA outputs of the PMD661 back to the 3.5mm RTN input of the SD302.  This allows you to monitor everything from the SD302 by using the rotary HP (headphone selector) switch on the SD 302.  Turn on the tone generator (1K switch) of the SD302 and calibrate the PMD661's record meters to that reference tone.  Got it?

i believe i have it calibrated but I don't get any signal when looking the marantz
it might have to do with the output of the xlr being mic instead of line but when I tried to change this I believe I entered setup and did something wrong--i tried to reenter set up but it doesn't enter it anymore.

What zoom?  Thread subject and question is connecting SD 302 to Marantz PMD 661. The PMD 661 will need to be in record pause to calibrate levels with the SD 302.

Look out if you made that mistake as follows: look in the right panel (output panel) down the right XLR connector, there is a LED that when lit indicates there's not in line level, If so, you must do the following:

Turn off 302 > Hold the PK/VU botton down while powering > –30 Left LED flashing means XLR Atten. Level > Press Battery check button (changes values to the right) several times until the left LED light (top) reaches 0 (line level) > To store press PK/VU botton multiple times until the meters perform their scrolling dance. Voila!

Saludos!

I did, but I can't get into setup no matter what.
