Title: Tinybox configuration, help me choose!
Post by: Andersounds on May 28, 2013, 10:09:38 AM
Hello!! thinking about ordering a tinybox but not 100% on the configuration.

My chain will be two AKG 414EB or Beyer MC930's > tinybox > M10

The box; what would be the advantage of getting output transformers, just noise reduction or a bit of sonic character?

Input; six pin mini xlr, so got that sorted and I assume the P48 input cable (although my mic's can go down to 11v and 9v)

Output; single mini socket > latching mini plug

What would you choose differently and why?  ;)

i don't know enough about transformers to comment but gen speaking i don't care for those recordings as much as nontrans
i would get the 48v cable unless you have other mics that can not run 48v and you needed the other cable anyway - then i would get both personally but you could get away with just the low volt cable in your case
i have the reg 1/8 in i don't see anyway i would pull it our or anything by mistake but the locking would def give you added protection

That's the one bad thing I'll say about Jon and his products...too many options! ;D

You should have this conversation with Jon.  He's very good and practical at sorting through what configuration will make the most sense for you.  Unless you plan to or think you might in the future run low voltage or active mics, it looks like your set up is fine for what you have.  You can always get the traffo and clean outs option and then see what you like.  You also have some gain options to consider if you want anything other than the standard gain configuration.

Hello all, yes looks like I'm pretty certain on the configuration now I suppose the transformers on the output is the only thing I'm not sure I need, some people seem to prefer one or the other so could be a matter of taste rather than a no brainer.. does the transformer have a characteristic sound that could be described?

I do like the sound of the limitations of transformers, put together a few valve amps over the years and like the sound of harmonic thickness, have a console at work that has very clean inputs but also a small sub mixer that is transformer coupled, both sound good to me, the transformer ins definitely have a good character about them.

I think you answered my question though as you have incorporated the transformers to give the tinybox a sound, rather than from a purely technical perspective.

Would it be simple enough to bypass the transformers if I wanted to hear the difference?

I chose dual outputs, one with output transformers and one that bypasses the output transformers.  Options are a good thing and either way you'll be happy.

even with 6-pin xlr out? EDIT; have seen a pic of 6pin in and dual 1/8 out so that could be the way to go

I could be wrong ,but I think you can only get 1/8 outputs.  The minixlr is for the input

even with 6-pin xlr out?
