A good bit bucket is the r-09.  I have a r-01 also and loved that too.  From some I hear that the MT is nothing but problems.

Professorhalfbaked and Seabrook - thanks for the info about the PMD 620. If the sound really is up to scratch, maybe this is my most cost-effective option. The Winfield offer looks especially tempting too.

And if I go down the 620 route, perhaps I won't feel so guilty about splurging on a 702 a little while down the line  ;)

I'll have to give those sound samples a serious listen.
