Windscreen for oktava mk012
« on: June 24, 2003, 03:39:33 PM »
Looking to get a windscreen for the oktava mk012 and was curious if anyone knows the size I need?  I'm trying to get them from masterpieceav.com and they dont have any specs on the size of them.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Adam

I appreciate the link, but I don't know which would fit the mk012's

I did a search and nothing came up for windscreens and the mk012s.

Just measure the Oktavas mic diameter - you'll find it's right around 20mm (I know b/c I used to run them).  Per the archives, the DPA UA0896 or Shure A81WS are also both right around 20mm and will fit the Oktavas well and work just fine.

I did a search and nothing came up for windscreens and the mk012s.

Windscreens (for the most part) aren't custom-made for mics, which is probably why you didn't find anything specific for the Oktavas.

For seriously windy, blustery conditions, I recommend the Shure's even though they're a bit more expensive.  For normal wind conditions, the DPAs are great, too.

Hey, if you're in the NE Ohio area, you're welcome to check mine out to see how they fit, borrow 'em for an evening or some such.  But...not many people here from NE Ohio!

Maybe ask in a post - someone else from your area may be willing to give you a hands-on look at the DPAs and Shures - where do you live?

I have the shures, and they work great...

i had a hard time deciding between the 2( dpa's & shures)  i decided to go with the shures because of the better wind protection, only wanted to buy one pair!!!

i just picked up the dpa's and i am not sure yet how i like them...i ran them for the first time at robert randolph on sunday and i could definitely hear the wind noise through my headphones while monitoring, though i haven't had a chance to see how bad the wind got on my recording.
one thing i did not do that has been suggested, is make sure you leave some dead space in the windscreen between the end of the mic hole and the mic itself.  i didn't think to do this until after the show started but it makes sense to me now.
