AKG 480 owners/users past users....
« on: June 24, 2003, 04:05:09 PM »
If you could only have one cap for the mic. Would it be the CK61 or CK63.

Looking to buy a pair & have a couple of options. One with each one.

Do the 63's cost more than the 61 new?

Thanks
Jeff

I owned both and used the 61s mainly.  I know that half of the board will probably disagree with me though.  It really depends what kinds of venues you will be taping.

don't know why it posted twice above.
;D ;D ;D  man after 11 hrs to get there and 12 hrs to get in the gate we had a blast...luckily the raod they closed on us was at night time and we didn't have to bake in the sun...(we bake all day).  I had time to sleep and make some cables.
Once we got the road open they stopped us from going in the entrance (on 55) and made us go on the highway 24...thought we were going to have to loop around and get back in line :yikes:  turns out we paralled the stopped traffic and did a loop on 24, hit the 24 (new) entrance and found a fat spot and all was very good!  Set up camp (tent, 10x13 w/ solid cloth sides canopy) and proceeded to vacation in my cooler....ahhhh endless Newcastle Brown on ice :drunk:....I was so wiped from the ride, I didn't make out at all Friday. but got my cables built.   Sat was a breeze got in early found a "dry " spot and held it all day.
Gorilla taping at it best for sunday.  I was late for Warren, came in on his second song.  Left for camp and hauled everything in for the Dead.
Left Mon. morning w/ no proble at all either ...getting better but not good yet.
we helped some poor kids (5 of em) who came w/ 1 small tent and no shade...had extra tarps and helped them out...wished I could have helped eariler (but was taping) they got FRIED.
What was Bill's take on the scene? that was some mud and the spongy ground......

gotta go take some tape to a buds and do some xfring.

peace

ive been running pretty much 61's for four years now and love them......people will say their best tapes are from 63's, etc, etc....but def depends on what venues.....if i had a used pair of 63's :'( id strictly run them indorrs and prolly strictly run the cards outdoor....unless your in, say, radio city or a phatty indoor venue.......but anyhoo, i believe ya should get the 61's for the summer and see how ya like em or buy 63's and if ya dont, maybe we could do a cap switch......go w/ 61's...... 8)

For an all-occasions cap, I'd say get the 61's also.  I ran both frequently.  The 61's saw mostly use outdoors once I got the 63's.  I had only the 61's for quite some time-always being pleased with the results both inside and outside.

The 63's are a great cap indoors in crappy sounding bars as well as inside larger arenas.  My best TS tapes in larger arenas were done using the 63's.

Yes the m148 does wonders...I always ran 61's and now loand them to a buddy who has the 63's when the placement is right.  Either way you'll be happy if you have the m148  but you won't get that for a while form the sounds of your orig post....As much as I love my 61's....63's may better serve you if you do a lot of indoors that have not so great room sound and not planning on much FOB.
My 61's will be at the ABB in Nissan this Friday. Orch section center.....

I run 63's 90% of the times but I am always taping indoors at crappy sounding venues. The 61's kick ass outdoors but indoors can be a little boomy at times when run DIN. If you run them XY they will sound better but a little too narrow of a sounstage for my tastes. The premier set up with 480's is 481>248 & 483>148. I am fortunate enough to have both at my disposal, I was smart enough to sell my 248 to a friend ;D He also has my 61's b/c I run the 4022's now for cards
I know you like, tape for people's approval and stuff, and wave your tapes around like they're your dick...  but even you can't actually think section tapes from philips sound good.

When I ran the 480s, I always liked the 63's on the end unless I was outside.  I rarely tape indoors in a good sounding room, so the 63's pretty much stayed on the ends.  Before I got the 63s, I would run the 61's XY in bad sounding rooms, and I liked the results.  Lots of folks will disagree with running the cards XY, but for me and my playback system at that time, that is what pleased me the most.  If I was moving back to the AKG's and had to chose one cap, I'd go with the 63s, but only because of my general taping circumstances.

See, I didn't really dig the m148 too much with the 22's, but that might have been the show I ran them at as much as the combination.  I mean, it was better than the MP-2, but still not quite right.  I'm going to try the EAA and see if that makes my stuff sound right.  I haven't had the opportunity to run the 22>148 up front yet (and probably never will), but I bet it would smoke anyone's tapes out there :yahoo:.

I haven't run my 4022>148 yet either. I've been pleased with the V3 upfront, quite frankly I really appreciate the pack size with 4022>V3, perfect for FOB.
