Quick mic placement/setup question....
« on: July 01, 2003, 01:28:26 AM »
Hey All...
I just made my first recording last night with pretty nice results
(to my ears)  Gear was Oktava MK-012 (Cardiod, XY at 90*; 3' Stand,
~6' back) > Tascam US-122 > ~Dell X200.  I was actually taping my
band (Bass, Drum, Guitar, Tenor Sax) from on stage.  I like the
stereo image I got, but I feel that the drums are a bit low in the
mix, especially the toms and bass drum.  Would a different mic
configuration/location help me get some more drums??  BTW, I also
have the hyper caps if I might get better results from those...in
any case, I will play around with my mics next time we play and look
for better results..

thanks in advance for the help

i run oktava mc012's as well, though have never run them onstage.  a recent change in configuration that i have been enjoying, however, is a DIN pattern, which is cardioid caps 20cm apart and at a 90 degree angle...think of a "v" with a 90* angle.  you might want to check that out...
i have some links around here that may help you out...

let me know how it works.
also, are you mic'ing the instruments at all and amplifying them through a p.a. (as you would typically do in a bar/club)?  if so, try just setting up near the soundboard and letting the soundman mix the club, if he knows what he's doing.  good luck.

Nope..there is no PA...just the amplifiers and unmic'ed drums...I'll try DIN..also, I was thinking about moving the mics a little closer to the drum kit and perhaps opening up the angle, perhaps in a ORTF config or something....

thanks for the input

DIN or ORTF should give you a wider soundstage, I'd first try to run the cards ORTF and see if it gives you more of a desired result.
