Title: ISO: DAT tapes suggestions

Hey now,

I need suggestions on where to buy a brick of tapes.  It's been a while since I taped; are the black Maxell's still AOK with everyone ?  When last I taped, the Sony's were wildly inconsistent, and I really like keeping the cost of tape to < $3.00 per.

Sorry, I've been out of the loop for a while, but would like to run my rig at JMP this weekend.  Any help is appreciated.

I will run DAT for a long time until I can afford hard drive recording

You could afford HD recording today, and actually come out ahead:

$ 700 | sell your DAP1
 -200 | V3 optical mod
 -200 | NJB3 from EBay + extra battery
 - 15 | optical cable
 - 25 | firewire cable
========================
$ 260 | leftover for shows, beer, new mic cables, etc.

Not to mention no more blank DATs to buy.  Dunno if my pricing on the used DAP1 is right, but I gotta believe you'll get more than $440.

Just looking at the savings on blank tape - The JB3 pays for itself after not having to order 6 or 7 bricks of DAT tape....but I tape very little these days (for now) so it's not worth it for me.....but if I were in CO and taping every weekend, the JB3 would pay for itself in 6 months easily.

jb3 has a side advantage, btw -- it makes a great playback device.  Load up the hard drive with tunes (mp3 or wav) and you have a sweet portable playback system.

selling my DA-P1/D8/DA-20/ 11years of DAT tapes for a $150 JB3 that MAY have trouble
does not sound like the next step for me besides I still like PERMENENT MASTERS
I would have more money maybe but if I did I certainly wouldn't waste it buying BEER

You could still keep your DAT tapes (though I suppose if you play back your DATs on your DAP1 instead of converting to CD, selling it could pose a problem).  The NJB3 has been *more* reliable than DAT, IME (though I've never used a TrashCan).  Permanant masters is easy.  Why not - beer is good.   ;D

There has been more than one occasion where I've had to go back to my master DAT and pull it back into the computer because the CD "master" wasn't any good any longer. I don't know, while I'm considering other non-tape options as a backup unless I can swing the 744 or DEVA unit, there isn't anyway I'm getting rid of my DAT for a while.

I basically use my DAT only for board recordings now. Trying to read the levels on the JB3 is more difficult than on DAT recorder.
