Title: PSP-2 > AD2K+ first run thoughts...
Post by: Kyle on August 09, 2006, 01:23:23 AM
I have had both the Benchmark and the EAA for some time now but for whatever reason I have never run the two together. I am hitting WSP at Blossom this Thursday, and want to run this combo, but I am a bit stuck on my input  level setting on the Benchmark. There is no opener, and I can't change levels on the fly with this combo, and I don't want to blow it.

I can not seem to find out what the max output gain of the PSP-2 is. I believe it is in the 20 - 25 db range, but does anyone know exactly what it is? I guess I will set the AD2K to +24 and hope for the best - any thoughts?

The input gain (PSP-2) will be set to -35 and the output set to 0.

Thanks :)

dunno but you could calibrate in front of the stereo by swapping the V2 and PSP2 to get equivalent levels in the range where you normally run your V2.

Tim,

Thanks for that. If I have it set to minimum gain and the AD2K to +24 I 'should' be ok. I am pretty sure you are spot on about the ~20-25 db range....

BC,

Great idea. That's going to be my evening project tomorrow after work.

+T's guys thanks much :coolguy:

are you using a sla to power the 2k kyle?
I need to get a non sla batt since I currently don't have a solution for field power yet.

yup, still carting the 12v sla. It's heavy. I need a new 12v power solution as well. I still have the 6v's too. They aren't nearly the bear that the 12v's are, but still - thats alotta lead ;D

Just got home. WooHoo!!

First off - this is my new fave combo - MK4>PSP-2>AD2K smokes. Just what I have been looking for. :realhappy:

Ran the PSP-2 at -35db input gain, 0db gain on the output. Ran the AD2K at +24, and peaked at -3. Probably could have bumped it up to +22 but I didn't want to clip - but it appears that I had the headroom. The show was pretty loud, recorded from the OTS behind the board. Would seem that the PSP-2 is putting out ~20db of gain.  Can't wait to run it at 24bit (coming soon).

Overall, great sound and great night for taping. Z-Man, Nate, Charles, Craig  all in attendance (I know I am missing someone). Great time had by all. Off to bed - first day of work tomorrow...

sweet................... >:D  glad it worked out.  who'd you record?
I can't wait to hear the combo, since I have the ability to run it too, with non muddy mics in front.  ;)
kyle, how does the 2k operate?  does +24 mean it's adding 24dB of gain?  therefore you ran ~44dB of gain total into your recorder?  I haven't even had the chance to play around with mine yet, besides powering it up.  the past 6 weeks have been total chaos for me with work, school, blah blah.

I don't have an owner's manual so I'm a little lost with this box.  maybe I should just drive to benchmark and see if they can hook me up with a hard copy of one.

edit:
just snagged a soft copy from the benchmark site.

you gonna have fun... 8)

i thought you started last week kyle?

work is overrated :P

Last week was the 2nd interview followed by filling out paperwork and then training. Next stop: 9 am Monday morning.
Work is very overrated - that's why I took 18 months off ;D
Broke as a joke, tho 8)

We still need to run a wide variety of comps Bean - I'll be 24bit in a week or two......

I am way stoked on the MK4>PSP-2 sound. I was such a Grace fluffer (and still am), but this little black box has one hell of a personality - the sound is so lush, textured - I'll need to think of a few more descriptive words.....

mmmmm.....  transformers and Schoeps....   so dreamy.....

There are some killer mk4~>psp2~>mod sbm1 recordings from the 2000 Japan Phish run. Especially 6-14-2000. If I'm not mistaken, they actually used this source with the soundboard for the live phish release.

i'd love to hear the mk4~>psp2~>ad2k recordings. i've almost run it with the u89i's on a few occasions. i've always been scared of the whole 'not being able to adjust the levels thing.'  ::)
