Portable rechargeable battery solution help sought
« on: September 13, 2024, 11:36:39 AM »
I have this Intertek 9900993 battery that doesnt hold charge anymore. It is used for a portable scoring machine used to display scores and a timer at outside sporting events for kids. The school has four of them and all the batteries are essentially toast.
I can't find replacements, the supplier wants vulgar money, etc. I was going to chop off the 5 pin plug end and wire it up to a USB plug for the new batts we all love. The output on the spent one says 13.5V 2.2 A but the outputs on my USB externals all are 5V 2.1A. I know there's V and A tutorials but I have never sorted it out.
I seek a battery builder who is interested in this job. Pics of the existing batt are attached. I'd want 4 of them total. Some kind of newer style batt with no memory floor like the old NiCads had so they can be used a little bit and plugged back in to get charged.
Thanks!
Adam Z

That is not a battery, it is an AC-DC adapter. The battery would be in the machine itself so you need photos of that and where that 5-pin plugs in. Have to get into the guts of the machine to replace the battery there. Can you power the scoring machine up when it's plugged into AC?

You’re going to take apart a power supply to find out why it doesn’t hold a charge when it’s not a battery?

Here’s a pic of the batt. It’s lead acid.
I’ll get online tomorrow and do some research. I figured I’d post a pic of the batt so you know I didn’t dismantle the adapter.
Thanks again

I can’t say for sure but it sure looks like a standard motorcycle battery. Also used for alarm systems and driveway gates.

What are the physical dimensions? It does look like a standard 12V/7AH SLA (sealed lead acid). Googling turns up dozens of choices $20-$30 range. They sell one at Home Depot, but my local doesn't have it in store, only ship-to or mail order.

Looks to be exact Leoch replacement:

I'm back with another battery question. Ive upgraded 7 of the scoreboard units with the 12V SLA.
Does anyone know if I can substitute a newer style battery like the long lasting UsB lithiums we use now?
Here's the batteries I've been using:

Can I just get any 12V 2amp output battery? I'd need to wire it to a regular red/black two wire so I'd be asking about that next...
Thanks in advance, here's a link to my latest tape:

Yes, that will most likely operate the scoreboard just fine.  Other than wiring it in correctly (red wire +, black wire -), the thing I'd be concerned about is how the battery is charged/maintained.  If there is some sort of charger built into the scoreboard it may not be compatible with batteries that use a chemistry other than SLA (sealed lead-acid).  But If using the appropriate external charger, no worry.

Thanks Gutbucket, there is an integrated charger. I won’t mess with it. I’ll keep doing what works.
