Sony HX99 record limit bypass?
« on: May 08, 2025, 07:04:56 PM »
Does anybody here have the Sony HX99?  I've been thinking of buying it to film shows, but have a couple questions.

Is there a way to remove the 5 minute record limit?  I couldn't find any confirmation if the Play Memories hack works on this cam or not?

Second, if you have managed to bypass the 5 minute limit, have you run into any overheating issues with filming shows?  I'm hoping to get through the the typical 90 minute set with one complete file, using a USB powerbank.

I just did a little reading and the HX99 5 minute limit is for video shot in 120p.  120p is for slo-mo type filming.  But  you'll be shooting in 25fps or 30fps, so the recording time limit will be 29 minutes.  Obviously, that's a lot better than 5 minutes, but I can say from experience; it's still a pain having to stop your video every 20-25 minutes.

I read somewhere that 4K recording is 5 mins, and 1080p is 29 mins.

And then I more recently came across a posting of someone requesting that support be added for the HX99 to work with the hack.  So, unless that person is a dummy and just doesn't know how to do it, then it sounds like the HX99 isn't going to work for filming.

I'm probably going to buy two new cams because it seems there's no high zoom, compact cam with a good sensor out there.  I'm thinking of getting the Sony RX100 VII (8x optical) for small club shows where I can get close to the stage, and then maybe a Panasonic ZS99 (30x optical) for larger shows.

Yeah ... after reading the user manual more closely, I think you are right.  To me, it seems like the manual is (intentionally?) vague on the time limit for 4K recording; and you have to do some digging to get hard answers.

For example, under "Recordable movie times" they list the amount of time you can record onto various sized SD cards (8GB, 16GB, 32GB, etc.).  Furthermore, it says for the highest bitrate possible (4K 30p 100M, it's 8GB card: 9 min, 16GB card: 35 min, 32GB card: 1 h 15 min and 128GB card: 2 h 35 min.  There's nothing about a 5 minute limit.

Only later does it say:

Continuous movie shooting is possible for a maximum of approximately 29 minutes at a time with the camera’s default settings and an ambient temperature of approximately 25°C (77°F).

However, the recording time is approximately 5 minutes when shooting movies in XAVC S 4K/XAVC S HD 120p/100p format.

So yep - 5 min limit on 4K vids.
