Title: Need a new laptop, want to spend $350 max?
Post by: MakersMarc on May 16, 2019, 12:15:03 PM
Thinking of this. Will be my main processing PC and for uploads/ downloads. My refurb lasted about 3 years but it's getting slow. No more refurb. Everything is on externals, so hard drive capacity is irrelevant.

Computer gurus, what think you?

Thanks!

No way!  Celeron processor and 4gb of ram is not good.  Spend $200-$300 more and you will much, much happier.

Sorry but I have to ask...why a laptop rather than desktop?

that price point is kind of rough.

not a laptop its a mini desktop. Its what I run. There are some in there that are close to your price point

If you are going to run windows you'll want atleast 8GB ram atleast an i5, i7 would be better. I linked to the systems but you can build them yourself

but if it has to be a laptop ? All the ones I would recommend are way past that price point. Dell XPS for example.

on the super cheap I still have my ASUS laptop beater that i bought for about 300+ several years back new. It can run windows 10 pro but it struggles.

But the ASUS has been solid and other than being a little slow for due to its age was a solid 300 dollar purchase

Highly recommend getting a pc / laptop with a Solid State Disk.   When a regular disk died on a Lenovo Thinkpad I have, I replaced the disk with a SSD, and now it boots up in like 30 seconds!    Vs taking several minutes before...

Im on my 8 th year on an HP 2000. It’s been a BRICK. I mostly stream and watch videos on it, gets 2+ hours use a day..but I process, upload, download and BitTorrent with a used desktop I got at a recycler/rebuilder.  The company hires and trains disadvantaged workers, too, and responsibly recycle electronics and electrical equipment so buying from them is also a social good. If there’s anything like these folks in your town, they deserve support.
