Title: Creating a DVD-A disc for DVD-A player
Post by: Kevin Straker on May 09, 2008, 11:34:03 AM
I know there are many threads about this, but they are very spread out. I'd like to create a concise step by step process to answer this once and for all. I have an Oppo DVD player that will play DVD-A so I am not looking for a work around, ala audioDVD creator(although that works). I only want this  to play on a DVD player that will specifically do DVD-A. I am using IMGBURN. I know how to do a work around, but I need clear, concise directions on the right way to create this disc.

Flac frontend (1.7.1)does not want to make a flac file from my 24/48 wave file. CDWave does an easy job of it though. Any problem with converting a 24/48 wave file to flac using cdwave?

Uncheck the "cut on sector boundaries" box and FLAC Frontend should work.  But CDWave will as well, so whichever one you choose.

OK, so I have my 24/48 flac files. I opened the app and dropped the files in with no trouble. When I hit create ISO it takes about half a second and i get "iso created successfully". The resulting file is only 848 kb. Is this right?

Nope, I dropped my wave files in, instead of flacs. It seems to be working now.

if you use cd wave, I think that there is a "save in alternate format" for 24 bit?

the reason for this is that the newest version of FLAC (v1.2.1) encodes 24 bit files a bit differently, and DVD-Audiofile hasn't yet been updated to accomodate 24 bit files that were encoded with FLAC v1.2.1
If you use older versions of FLAC, you can drag and drop the FLAC files directly into DVD-Audiofile.  or, as you discovered, just using the WAV files instead of FLAC also works.

Thats what I use.

the command line tool that does the actual dvd-a creation uses an older version of flac and i haven't figure out how to get the newest one working correctly yet.  apparently a newer version of the tool will make it much easier to drop in your own flac versions...

A new version of dvda-author (which is used by DVD-Audiofile) now integrates FLAC 1.2.1.
It also makes it possible to create so-called navigable hybrid DVDs, with both audio zone and video zone on the same disk.
Pre-release tests are being made and I expect to post a release candidate on the DVD-Audio tools forum Sun 8th June.
Best, Fab Nicol

Concluding Summary:
1. Cut up files with cdwave and save with "24 bit alternate format" box checked.
2. Download Scott Brown's dvd-audiofile here:
http://satellite.epix.net/~scb/dvd-audiofile/DVD-Audiofile0.42.1win.zip (http://satellite.epix.net/~scb/dvd-audiofile/DVD-Audiofile0.42.1win.zip)
3. Drag and drop your 24 bit wave files on to the dvd audiofile window and make your ISO.
4. use imgburn to burn the ISO on to a DVD.

Thanks - that just got me! It ran too fast with the flacs (and made a 2MB file) and ran forever with the wavs.

Hi,

I've rencently uploaded a new version of dvda-author on the DVD-Audio tools site (http://dvd-audio.sourceforge.net (http://dvd-audio.sourceforge.net))

The new version can be used to replace the original executable in the DVD-Audiofile frontend.
However, Scott's app will only use legacy features, except for the added compatibility with the latest FLAC soundfiles (version 1.2.1).

This new 08.06 version of dvda-author can create navigable "hybrid" DVDs, with both a DVD-Audio zone and a DVD-Video zone. Navigation is possible between both zones, by pressing on the "direct access" buttons on your remote control. If you create, for example, a "video linking" group #5 in your DVD-Audio zone, linking video titleset 4 in DVD-Video zone, you'll get to this titleset from DVD-Audio zone by pressing "stop" then the "5" button of your remote. While playing the video titleset, you can get back to DVD-Audio zone by pressing "stop" then the "4" button of your remote.

DVD-Video zones can be authored with Lplex to create "universal" audio DVDs.

This version has been tested extensively under Linux, few tests have been done with Windows so far. Please report issues on the dvd-audio tools mailing list.

Best, Fab

Hello, one quick question about the creation of the XXX.ISO. What is the size difference in the resulting image if I create it with flac files versus wave files? Is the resulting ISO smaller because I input flac files instead of wave?
Title: Re: Creating a DVD-A disc for DVD-A player
Post by: libfab on July 10, 2008, 08:30:26 AM
No.

FLAC is decoded into LPCM streams, just as WAV. This is a constraint imposed by DVD-Audio specs, it'll be the same for all DVD-Audio authoring applications.

I made a DVD-A where I put set 1 in group 1 and set 2 in group 2 and my disc only played set 1. Is this a DVD player (Denon 2200) setting or will I always have to manually skip to group 2?

In my Denon 2200, it always stops after Group 1, and then I have to manually skip to Group 2.  As far as I can tell, there's not way to change that on this deck.  I don't know about other decks though.

Thanks and +vibes for the answer from a 2200 owner ;) I guess I will only use different groups now if there is more then one band playing at the show.

Hi,
the command-line processing tool dvda-author (which does the processing of the DVD-Audio structure) admittedly does not ensure seamless group-to-group audio playback.
For those interested in the technical side, the issue stems from a somewhat sketchy writing of the code that generates .IFO files. I'm working on this to solve this issue.
I hope to be able to write an upgrade in February -- check the DVD-Audio tools webpage http://dvd-audio.sourceforge.net (http://dvd-audio.sourceforge.net)

Is there a new version of DVD-audiofile for PC? My version 0.42 isn't working anymore. It opens up, I add the files, click create, it asks what/where to save and it does a couple flashes of the usual dialog boxes and it says it completed the task. It just seems like it created the file too fast than what I'm used to, so I checked the file and it's just a few megabytes in size.

So is there a newer version for PC?

It sounds like your java is alright so it might be the files them self. Did you add flac or wav files? I seem to remember when I started burning DVD-A I tried wav and the same thing happen so I switched to flac files and it went flawless.

FLAC files as usual. I did that same mistake way back when I first tried creating the image using wav files. Scott PM'ed me the link to 0.60 and it's running just fine.

Thanks and keep up the great work!  ;D
