Title: New Nevaton MC59/S microphones in action
Post by: Popmarter on January 25, 2020, 03:03:15 PM
Went out this week to work with my new Nevaton MC59 / S microphones (matched pair) > MixPre-3 II. Had to go in  >:D mode using Kangool (70°  few cm apart, front). I uses a bit of tape to tighten the cables as I looked 'kinda' fragile (for  >:D that is)
Mics are tiny, but not that tiny. Had to make holes in the Kangool to get them nice facing. Use a custom design mount from srs@srsrecordingservices.com (on shapeways).

Level was set to 20 on the MixPre, which was perfect. Only a few moments it went around 3db in red, but no problem with 32bit floating (48khz).

DFC in a small venue (400 people), with hanging PA (2 Adamson SX18 top and 2 Adamson A215 sub, each side).

Here is a sample
https://soundcloud.com/user-620536679/nevaton-mc59s-microphones-sample

Any clever comments or questions on this? I think we have a winner here. The bass is quite heavy, but this might as well be the room and the fact the mics were partly hidden. I have a open taping concert in a few weeks and will post a new sample than.

If anyone feels like doing a fine remastering job, get in touch!

I’m very interested in these mics. What did you end up paying for a matched set? You get XLR or the hardwired version?

Your clip sounds fantastic. Super clean  :headphones:

I see the hardwired. Were the xlr’s more?

XLR's are longer and heavier overall.  They were the same price as the hard wired when I picked up my hard wired matched pair.  It appears that the matched pair of XLR's are now 60 € cheaper than a hard wired matched pair.

I'm bummed that I haven't been able to run my pair due to health issues on my end.

Late last year, I inquired about a "complete" set, including matched cardioids/wide-cardioids/omnis with a pair of hardwired "S" cables (5m each).

I was quoted approximately $2710 USD, including shipping to USA.

Paid 1500 euro for the MC59 S version (which had the XLR at the end of the wire, see picture). I wanted the capsules small.
It is a matched pair of cardiods.

It is a matched pair of cardiods.  Bought through dealer in The Netherlands, so postage was about 7 euro extra.

Hey, Popmarter! Are you bringing these Nevatons to Deventer on Friday? I’m curious to check them out!

Please take a photo of these set up on a stand like at a show.

I've been itching for some new mics just for a change of scenery. I love my MCE400's so much these are on the list.

Thanks for the sound sample. Sounds fantastic.

Last weekend Aaronj and I got together at a Supersuckers gig. We got permission for tripodtaping and soundboard. See picture :)

Left stand is from Aaronj: DPA 4015c (wide-cardiods) > SD MixPre 6 (PAS, about 35cm apart, around 90 degree)
Sample: https://soundcloud.com/user-620536679/sample-dpa4015c (https://soundcloud.com/user-620536679/sample-dpa4015c)

Right stand is from me: Nevaton MC59/S (matching cardiods) > SD MixPre 3 II (PAS, about 20 cm apart, around 90 degree)
Sample: https://soundcloud.com/user-620536679/supersuckers-sample-nevaton-mc59c (https://soundcloud.com/user-620536679/supersuckers-sample-nevaton-mc59c)

Mics where on the same height, around 2.25meter.

Sorry, no close pictures.

^ Yeah, it is pretty rare to see more than one stand at a show here. Hell, it is pretty rare to see even one stand! Popmarter and I meet up sometimes, though, to make a (small) section...

In the photo, I am the one on the left side wearing the hoodie and Popmarter is in the center wearing the Polo shirt.

Aaronj his recording is on LMA now: https://archive.org/details/supersuckers2020-02-07.dpa4015c.sbd.flac

Sounds very good and way better than the tiny room :) A job well done!

Here's my MC59S matched pair (wide cardioid) in action (amphitheater). I have a second source from the same show (Neumann AK50) and these sound much better. Different pattern, I know, but the Nevatons sound better, IMO.

The Nevatons may be fine microphones, I don't know, but this comparison is iffy. These are two very different kinds of microphones.

The Neumann AK 50 is a very high quality supercardioid with rolled off low-frequency response, more like a speech microphone than a general music microphone. Its response extends to very low frequencies and its directional pattern is well maintained down there--just with a large rolloff that's baked into the capsule design. I suspect that it was mainly intended for film and video sound, TV studios, podiums, conferencing and the like, although Neumann doesn't say so.

If I had the KM 150s that I used to own, and were using them as main microphones for music that had important low frequency energy, that would be an odd choice since there are equally good supercardioids that don't have the rolloff. But if I were doing it anyway for some reason, some serious low-frequency EQ would be in order, which would also tend to increase the sense of spaciousness. Not doing that would be incomprehensible to me, given the nature of the microphones and the program material.

Yep, definitely different. As I stated. My sample size is still small, and venue makes a huge difference, but the reason I say they sound better is that so far I've had to do little to no mastering with the Nevatons whereas the AK50s I can't recall ever not having to fiddle with the EQ to get it how it should sound. Of course, when I get that right they're awesome. Also, the sound also goes through nBob's active cables and Naiant's IPA. I'm not sure how much that might affect sound quality, but it's nonetheless part of the signal path to the recorder.

Just chiming in for my general love of Nevatons. Love my 49s and am toying with the idea of getting a low profile setup with the actives. Interested in hearing more samples of anything out the 59 lineup

I put up two recent shows with these on Dime (levellers and Sorcha Richardson) which are more or less raw. Together with a Zoom F3 this is a pretty stealth set.
