UPDATE: MBHO U.S. Retailer Success!
« on: June 22, 2008, 06:32:36 PM »
I've been to the ones listed via a search in google but no one can get what I need. I'm looking to purchase a set of KA 300 NB's (wide cardioid) capsules for my 603 bodies. From what the retailers are telling me, it's REALLY difficult getting any MBHO products right now due to inconsistent communication from MBHO's U.S. contact Marcus D(something). He don't return phone calls or emails. Then he sends me an email saying product is available again. So I try to get an order going and no dice. Dude disappears again and the retailers can't find him to order stuff.

So I guess I'm trying to see if within this community someone knows of a retailer who may have a stock in hand of the above mentioned capsules. A webpage, email address, contact number....whatever you can provide. I've tried:

Sonic Sense~can't get a hold of anyone at MBHO but not because from lack of trying.
Dales Pro Audio~awaiting response from Dan Ross.
Atlas Audio~talked to someone, told me to leave email inquiry, sent, no response yet.

Are there any others?

Thanks for help! And sorry if this is in the wrong forum. Please move to appropriate forum if needed. Thanks Mods!  ;D

While not a US retailer, you may have better luck getting Oleg to order and ship to you. In one of the threads he or bean started, he said it would be 2-3 weeks from when he ordered to when he had them in hand. I know it's a circuitous route and you may have to pay duty when they arrive but it might be your fastest option.

That does sound like a viable option. I may have to go that route if nothing else comes up.

Paging Oleg...

Oh, and +T for the advice.

Dan called me today from Dale Pro Audio. I guess he talked with Marcus and supposedly he has my caps sitting on a shelf. I had talked to Marcus a few months ago expressing my interest in some caps. Dan said that he could probably have them out in a week to my door. Exchanged payment info and I'm just waiting now.

I would have to recommend Dan also. The communication was always there and email correspondence was either next day or the following. He took care of my needs and I'm sure he'll take care of anyone else needing equipment from MBHO.

Sonic Sense I think are having problems with their email from their site. I emailed them before about a SD722 and MBHO caps and I never received a response. Parker is really cool though, just that they are really having trouble getting through to Marcus or even the German office. But just like I learned in business class...whoever has the product gets my money.

Thanks all and a round of T's.  ;D

EDIT...Just received this: "Hello Amaro, consective matched pairs are in stock. They will ship Tuesday from NYC. Thank you for the support! Regards, Dan Ross"

First off, HUGE +T for being able to track those down ;D I tried a few different times thru SS and couldnt get the order to go thru for sure :) All you need now is a NOS KwonBar and youre in business :) Do you have the 603's or the 603A's? You should ditch the 603's and try out the 604's or 604A's ;D 8) The 604's are TINY from the 1 or 2 pics ive seen of them. Im sure the 604A's would kick some major ass. Ive been wanting to get something new w/ out spending too much, and if I sell teh 603A bodies, I can get the 604A's without much hassle/struggle, and not to much more money probably :) I read a review of the 604+KA200N Card capsule and the reviewer LOVED the combo. Said the mics were still VERY detailed but not fatiguing at all, and the cards/subs/hypers dont have that high-end sharpness that often makes recordings fatiguing to listen to. And I couldnt agree anymore even w/ the 603A's and the cards/hypers. They DEF dont have the AKG 480 'bite' that I was used to, and I couldnt be happier about that. I bet teh 604/604A's have a SWEET lowend too. The 603A/KA500 combo NEVER gets too fatiguing. I sometimes have to add a little lowend but thats because the mix at the show. If there is ample lowend liek I like, then the 603A/KA500 combo picks it up in ALL its glory 8)

I bet those KA300 Subs can really handle some FINE MBHO lowend. I CANNOT WAIT to hear some recordings of yours bro ;D I especially cant wait for the KA300/603>702 stuff to come forward. I really like the MBHO>7xx combo's, dont you? Very natural and detailed, while still maintaining sparking highs, solid mids, and a thumpin lowend, but a well maintained and tight lowend ;D My recent 6/6 teddy thompson/moe sets, I ran KA200/603A>722, and I was def happy with the cards for a change, just a tad too much crowd chatter, and one of the main reasons I use hypers 99% of the time :) But it was def exceptable for sure. there werent many people there for teddy thompson and that recording sounds really good. They moe also came out smokin as well, and had better lowend since moe is louder and heavier ;D But as ALWAYS in da burgh, people cant STFU at shows and talk teh WHOLE TIME 99% of teh time :P Its really a drag at most shows :( So I run hypers and you NEVER hear the yappers at all teh shows Im at ;D Even my 6/8 YMSB show has next to ZERO crowd chatter, and I only ran my KA500 Hypers at like 6-6.5' high!!! I expected ALOT more chatter on that one, but as usual, they are VERY tight and focused, but still maintain an awesome stereo image and spaciousness to them that makes them sound HUGE. I love these mics. Cant wait to run em w/ a transformer pre in the future :)

Hmmm, next. Lets see? Figure-of-Eight vs. Hypers ??? I love me some hypers, but MS w/ the Card or Subcard as your mid would be very sweet. Id try that sybcard alot personally :)

Wonder when the 604s will come out, they sound pretty good!  I love the size and modular system.  Hope they will be affordable.  8)

edit: I just noticed that the review article I posted was dated 3/05, so I guess these mics have been out awhile already, but they are not listed on MBHO's homepage under 'product.'  Anyone know if these are still made/sold?

Bean,

I have the 603's non-actives. I really like these mics! I think I'll be sticking with this combo for a while. That's why I invested in the subs. And I'm really diggin' the MBHO>702 combo a lot. I may try to get out this weekend and tape a local band just to try the subs. I'm really itching to try them out.

I emailed a thank you to Dan Ross at Dale Pro Audio and mentioned the 604's. Perhaps he'll send me some info which I'll share with the rest of y'all.

I know, I know....I've been looking at that figure 8 cap as well. I've been hearing some really good recordings with the Schoeps MK21/MK4 and the figure 8 cap. I'm liking it! I can't afford it now but some day I'll get me one. Not to say that I'm comparing the Schoeps with the MBHO line, just opens up the curiosity of the MBHO M/S possibility.

Yes, please dont compare MBHO to Schoeps :P ;D

MBHO's are the way those other German mics SHOULD SOUND ;D The MBHO's dont have an overly bloated lowend, and you are ACTUALLY LISTENING to the detail of the live performance w/ the MBHO's, whereas w/ the Schoeps, youre listening to the characteristics of the Schoeps rather than the detail of the actual performance. *ducks*

I used to feel the same way about schoeps.  didnt care for the coloration at all.

but....
after many stereo upgrades, I now own them and do actually find them "all that", plus chips and a big ol' dill pickle.

That said, MBHOs do sound nice and smooth.  I went to SS to buy a pair of 184s once and Marc sold me on the 603a's after doing an hour or so of critical listening on his system.
I should dig up my old HO' blumlein recordings and seed them again.

Yep, don't compare them to Schoeps unless you have run them both extensively....because there is no comparison, period.  In any decent recording studio you are much more likely to find a pair of Schoeps than a pair of MBHOs.  You think Schoeps has been around this long for no reason?  You think that they can get away with their 'bloated' pricing for no reason?  Talk it up all you want because deep down, you all would trade your 603/KA200 for a pair of cmc64s in a heartbeat :P

I've run the HOs for about a year+, schoeps only two times ...until this past spring where I have run them maybe 6 times or so.  They are on a whole other level to my ear.  Air, detail, space...reality!

but thats just me.  YMMV.
I still think the LSD2 is one of the best concert taping mics out there, given its price vs. performance value.  Unless you've got a very resolving and dynamic playback rig, you are hard pressed to really do better.
but thats just me...again.

1/15th the price of schoeps rig to do the same types of recording.

any way, sorry for the hi-jack.
great score on the caps.  those should sound pretty bad-ass.

Me too, it is more the other way around as I did a Fuji Rock run with 648/KA200s and I will admit that the MBHO is a good choice in a bass heavy PA enironment away from the stage.    I think MBHOs are defintely bright mics and a bit shy in the bass (that is why it pairs well for Bean and his 722).  603/KA200s remind me of Josephson C42s more than cmc64s.  Do Josephsons use MBHO diaphram assmeblies?

Here's what I received from Dan Ross regarding the 604's...

"The MBP604n is a descendant of the MBP603. The MBP604n may be used with a variety of capsules from the MBHO line (KA100, 1000, 300 etc). They have a transformerless output with a compact design (only three inches)"

Only 3 inches long! Wow!

Dan Ross cut and pasted that from the mixonline article I linked above:

Quote
The MBP 604 N is a descendant of MBHO's MBP 603. The MBP 604 N may be used with a variety of capsules from the MBHO line (purchased separately), including the KA 100 LK (linear omni), KA 300 NB (wide cardioid), KA 800 A (figure-8) and KA 1000 N (large-diaphragm cardioid). I reviewed a matched pair of MBP 604 Ns (available at no extra charge) fitted with KA 200 N cardioid capsules.

The MBP 604 N features transformerless output, compact design (only three inches long) and operates on phantom power ranging from 24 to 48 volts DC. Frequency response with the KA 200 N is stated as 40 to 20k Hz. Preamp and capsule housings are constructed from solid brass and are nicely finished in matte black. Capsules screw smoothly to the preamp tube, and once secured, appear to be made from one piece.

What's odd is that the 604n is not listed on mbho's homepage (mbho.de).  Sounds cool though.

I've found about what you guys have found on the 604's. I've also found that Oleg has posted in several forums about the 604's. I'm intrigued now and want to know more about these mics. I saw in another site that the mic and capsule is 8 cm long. Just over three inches! That's pretty amazing. And I also saw a pic of it in active form.

right, but I was just surprised that they (hypers,fig8) weren't on MBHO's own website.  So i can't find plots for either of those caps.

sorry ,don't count in $ :-)
at least not the stuff which produced in other currency
and for the people who accused me in high prices 1 and half year ago   i can only suggest  pray for the $ as what you are going to get is a major price increasement when the local vendors would be out of stock .

of course we also carry excellent products from pearl  and few others .
these who need any stuff  we would be glad to help with .

That would be great! I may get one (or a pair) but it won't be until next tax season. Only six months away though.

I forgot to mention, when I was in the process of getting the subs I had a horrible dream. I had set up the gear at a show, can't remember what it was, but I stepped out to go the the restroom. When I came back there was this dude standing over my gear yelling "why can't I get it to work!" He had smashed the caps off of the bodies! I was looking at my mics on the ground and they were demolished. Imagine this...take a snickers bar and with a hammer beat just about an inch off of one of the ends. Can you imagine how smeared that would look? That's what my mic looked like on the floor. And then I woke up.....Whew!

I've been trying to get the MBHO fig 8 since March.  First from Sonic Sense - no luck after many months and money refunded.  Then ordered one from Dan at Dale Pro June 2 and I'm still waiting.  I must say though that he has been good at keeping me updated on developments or lack thereof.  First it was going to come from the Brooklyn warehouse in a few days.  Then it had to be shipped from Germany with a two week timeline.  After it didn't show up in a month, Dan called and they said they were in the middle "of a production run" and it would be a couple more weeks.  That was about three weeks ago.

The cool thing is I feel like they're making one just for me  ;D, but I wish they'd be quicker about it.  I suggest that if anyone is considering buying a Ka800, they do it now.  I know it's a small company and their mics are basically handmade, but you gotta think they are making more than just one.
