budget, unknown really - have not thought about it to much
but the cheaper then better
by cheaper i would want to spend enough for it to sound good but on the flip side if i can spend $500 and it will sound "as good" as $2000 i don't want to drop $2000
pref sd

i guess the real question is not only opinions on what might go good with the 480s but also what cap
i saw some text files and it seems people tend to use cards and omnis together - is this correct?
thanks

there's no right or wrong answer. if it were me, and that was my budget, i would try and score some adk tl's (or some other LD's) as a flanking pair. running omnis split w/ your 48x coincident would be very nice. or score some 45x, 46x off here or ebay and have an akg orgy. :)

i actually have been keeping my eye out for some stock 460 bodies
i figured if i have the caps there is no reason not to have the bodies :)
its kinda hard to find just bodies though
then i would prob have to get the 62s though

i ran my adk tl's with mojowill's 483's and loved them together.  the ability to run something risky like blumlein or M/S with the shure thing of the 483's is nice, or just warm things up and run the cards with the linear sound of the 480's....cant beat it.

For 3 mic set-ups, I usually like two more directional capsules + a center capsule that is less-directional.  Ideally 2x cardioid + one center omni, or alternatively 2x hyper or 2x shotgun + a center cardioid or hyper-card.  I have a GBA show from San Diego up on bt.etree right now that is 2x c452eb/ck1 (card) + 1x c460b/a60/ck22 (ctr omni) here: http://bt.etree.org/details.php?id=512534

Considering you already have the 480s, I'd go with a 460 stock (warmer sound than 480s) and have the ability to use the capsules interchangeably.  Once you get the 460 body, you can then also search for an a60 reducer ring and start collecting the 45_ series ck_ vintage capsules.   ;)

Roger (goodcooker) has a single c460b/ck61 for sale in the YS http://taperssection.com/index.php/topic,97029.0.html

I ran ADK TLs and AKG 460s when I was doing 4 mic mixes. I thought they sounded good together, and most of the time I thought the mix was vastly superior to either source on their own.

I ran two sets of 480's for a while.  I really spent the majority of time just experimenting with different configs, setups and the like moreso than just sticking to one way of doing it.

For me the best sound that I got that I liked was a set of 481's (DIN) with a flanking set of 482's at 3' pointed straight ahead.     I never really felt that running the hypers in the middle helped and if anything I thought it kinda took away from the power of the 483's a bit.

Doug Oade and I had many conversations about running four channels.  He was of the opinion that the center pair should be run x/y with the flanking omnis.  I never really dug the sound of x/y with the 480's so I switched to DIN as well as DINa.

When in post I would average a 70% - 30% mix of cars to omins.   Basically I would listen to the cards and fill in with the omnis.  I know others who would do the opposite.  Start with omnis and fill with cards.

One thing above all else that I have learned about 4 channel recording has to do with the amount of gear you're carrying and that you need to setup.  I rarely am in situations where running m/s or blumlein with a ld mic is possible with a flanking pair of whatever mics.   Now i've moved to a couple of sets of actives so I can run those configs with a minimal footprint.  Now if you are in the section then a pair of ld's and a flanking pair would be more manageable.  FOB not so much.    Just something to consider.

If I had to vote i'd say a second set of 480's or a set of 460.  It will allow you to make.  That way your caps are interchangeable.  Some shows you may want to run a 4 channel mix some shows you may want to run in such a way that you have two separate sources.

thanks guys

i was leaning towards some 460 for just the exact reason of being able to use the same caps

the gear would slim down for me as i would prob try out the r44
but stand stuff would increase some

as for stand issues, i use a combo of akg tbar on top of stand and a shure vert bar screwed on top of that. as small as a footprint as your gonna get. you should see that fucking helicopter rotor that ofotd uses though. :P
