Title: Recommend one addition to my rig
Post by: crackhead on July 23, 2007, 09:35:34 PM
Current setup:

DPA 4061s(microdot)>DPA Battery Box>M1

I think my tapes can come out better with some kind of pre or A>D in the chain.  What would you get for a dramatic increase in sound quality?  Caveat: Must be stealthable, i.e. no larger than the dimensions of the M1.

Thanks.

Let's say $600-$800, hypothetically speaking

DPA MMA-6000 preamp.

Is this contraption that much better than the normal DPA power supply?

The DPA MMA-6000 is a great pre. I run a 4060>MMA6000>R-09  setup a lot and the recordings are consistently great. Never ran their battery box, not sure how they compare.

I have been told by some on this borad that have/had both that the pre smokes the battery box.

Here is a good example of the above mentioned rig.Check out track 4. ;D

I ran them both and the MMA 6000 sounds much better, and you can add
extra gain without any noise. Last time i checked the price was around 450.00
Bought mine from Cascade Media.....nice folks!

R09

i'd ditch (or keep for backup) the m1 and go R-09!

the a/d is definately up there, and they have 3 colors to choose from now.  ;)

i've found that the 4061's are great mics, but you might want to check the market for some decent directional stealthy mics too.

mic2496 adds a lot of bang for the buck

the Core-Sound mic2496 might be interesting to try...
but for straight up analog preamp, you'd be hard pressed to go wrong w/the DPA model.  it does sound fantastic.

ditching the M1...probably a good idea as well.  R9 or the Korg MR1 would be a good direction.

Thanks for all the suggestions, dudes.

So, it seems that all you dudes are all on board the R09's train these days.   Is the portable HD recording thing stable?  I was always scared about drop-outs and stuttering sound with a HD recorder.  My friend showed me his R09 last year and the build quality looked cheesy, nothing compared to the brick like quality of my beloved M1.

Is the R09 considered the gold standard for low profile applications these days? Or can I get something a bit more substantial (but still stealthable).

cheers

the R9 runs off of SD flash cards.
no moving parts at all.  that is where it shines.
Drop your M1 ?  fucked.
Drop your r9...pick it up and its still rolling.

no maintenance, ever.
5+ hours on two AA batteries.
far superior sound over the M1.

Of course this assumes that you haven't spread it out all over the floor of the venue. ;-)

This isn't a knock on the R9, it's true with just about ANY piece of gear.
