Hey yall.
Looking into helping a friend get into the game. He ran my UA-5 forever but i recently had to sell it. Now he would like to buy his own pre for about 200 and I told him I'd help gather info for him.
What is yalls pick? FWIW... his bit bucket is a H120.
I know nothing about CA's gear and am quite familiar with the UA-5. As far as sound goes....what do yall think?
His mics as of now are akg 391's
Thanks for any opinions.

in this case, ua-5 all the way.
since he is running with a optical capable bit bucket (ihp120) and using full size mics, why not get the box that also allows for some growth.
if he was using at853s and a r-09, i would have said the ca.

I agree. I am running a BusMod UA-5 and a Church pre. For the AKG mics and H120, the UA-5 ADC is the way to go. IMHO.
For the "small" set-up, I like the small mics > Church pre > R-09.

babysitting ebay for a unmodded ua-5 and sniping can really pay off.......

Hey all,
I am the friend in question. Thanks for doing my grunt work for me Kev, and for using cool lingo like "bit bucket."
I can see which way this is going already, so i mostly likely will try to be patient and snag a good deal on a ua-5. it fit my needs before, it's relatively cheap, and most important since I am a techno-retard, I already know how to use it.
I can''t help but do a little research and shopping though. I was wondering if any of these would meet my needs (I want an all-in-one box, and would rather not have to get a new battery set-up, but i could if i got something that needed it). Are any of these as good as a ua-5 in terms of pre-amp and converters?
Edirol FA-66
M-Audio Firewire 410
M-Audio 1814
Presonus Firebox
Will the M-Audios work without a USB?
Will an S/PDIF out go directly into the digital in on my H-120? I have an optical cable already.
Finally, the Apogee Mini ME is obviously very popular, but outside my budget. what do you think would be the best price I could score on one of those, just in case i thought i could get away with paying a little more?
Thanks for the input everyone.

i dont think any of these

have been modified as stand alone like the ua-5. that is what the digi-mod does on a ua-5, it allows it to be used without a computer.
a S/PDIF coax will not go directly into the iriver. it only has mini toslink (optical) for a digi in. while both are digital signals, they are 2 different animals. there is a hosa box (i think 276) that turns a coax into a toslink connection if your future a/d does not have optical out.

I also recommend M-audio Fast Track pro which works stand alone on 9v battery pack without any mod.
Only problem is the missing optical digi out.
Hose 276 or M-audio Co2 can conver spdif to optical for you.

I've got your D-Mod UA-5, PM sent.

Thanks, everyone. KLowe snagged me a UA-5 off eBay for $187 incl shipping. Now I just need to get some kind soul to do the digi-mod for me. can offer a few bucks, trades, tickets, good vibes, etc.
Is there a thread that explains all the mods succinctly? Kev sent me something at one point, but not surewhere it is now. The W mod can only be done on a unit purchased from Oade? And that's not something that anyone can do?
Jeff
p.s. sorry I missed rePat's offer. It was about the same price and would have saved me the trouble of getting the mod. Someone buy his box!

Nevermind. Found the UA-5 FAQ, duh.... :P
