MR-1 good upgrade from R-09?
« on: October 23, 2007, 08:56:05 PM »
Hi Guys,

I apologise if this has been discussed before, but i have the opportunity to buy a Korg MR-1 for a pretty good price. At the moment im running a stealth rig of the following;

MKE-2 (MM in-ear model) -> ST-9100 -> R-09

Im wanting to know whether getting the MR-1 will be a significant upgrade or not. Any ideas??

Thanks

if you are going to spend that kind of money, you may want to consider better mics instead. it will make a bigger impact in sound in my opinion.
My gear: JK Labs AKG DVC > M10
              AKG 460 ck61/ck62/ck63 > DR-70D

A live concert to me is exciting because of all the electricity that is generated in the crowd and on stage. It's my favorite part of the business, live concerts.

well i can get the MR-1 for AU$950. Im guessing the appropriate upgrade for mics will be DPAs? I want to keep the rig as stealth as possible whilst getting maximum sound quality.

The Sennheiser MKE-2 mics are great.. I have had the MR-1 I was not Blown away.. To be honest.. I would stick with what you have got. I know I will can some -T's for saying that.. I think the MR-1'S internal preamp is pretty noisy.. for a $1k recorder.

sorry if this is a noob response, but wouldnt going from the ST-9100 line-in into the MR-1 eliminate any noise, if the MR-1 is set to 0db??

Yes with the 9100 and the MR-1 set to zero there is no noise.. But I was just talking about the machines [-] any preamps... And of course if your going to have an MR-1 you need a 9100  ;) lol.... But seriously yes with a preamp like mine or another good quality preamp the MR-1 is a very good recorder.. I just felt that for $1k the built in preamp should have been better. Not that I am complaining because it just means more preamp sales for guys like me.

while the onboard input stages suck on the mr1...agreed...
its line input is respectable enough to take advantage of that DSD resolution.

I tells ya, it has taken my recordings up a notch.  and i've had several r9s.

but, IMO....just buy new headphones.
