Title: Shapeways mount / Shure doughnut - suggestions?
Post by: lsd2525 on September 26, 2019, 11:21:52 AM
Got this Shapeways mount for the SKM184's. Fits in the Shure doughnut, but when the mics are mounted the bar moves due to the weight of the mics. I'm about to wrap it in gaff tape to make it "fatter", and thus hopefully more stable. Before I do, anyone have any other suggestions? I'm all ears.

added the lowpro mount (from srs) on the bottom.  I think you can piece them together so you don't have to buy the whole thing.  worth very penny!

I've got a knockoff of that, and it will not work. Unless I saw it down to about an inch. I think Scott makes a wider one of these, but I went with this version. I shouldn't have.

Is the A55 bigger or smaller than the A53?

Fork it. Gaff tape for the win. Good and solid now. At least till the next time I manage to timber-ho my stand

I had the low profile base for the Rycote and I'm not a fan after a few ruined recordings. The stock Rycote base has a cable clip which kills and vibrations on the cable from rail kickers, etc but the low pro base has nothing.

I've been taping for 15 years and never heard a cable vibration.  ymmv.  stand kick or something sure but......

Hoping to learn something here.... Are the Shapeways bars 'better' than the Schoeps bar or its clones (Kwon, NOLA, etc)? I've never used a Shapeways mount just because the delrin bars/Shure donut do everything I need them too. When I consider switching to a Rycote shockmount plus the Shapeways bar I start realizing I've now got something that is more expensive yet much less low-profile. Is the benefit all about the cable holder?

TIA!

the srs (shapeways) bars are lighter and much cheaper than the kwon, nola etc.

Pretty easy to isolate the cable using a cable wrap. I've always done it that way and never had an issue before. Sure, the cable clip is more convenient, but certainly that is more than one way to tackle the problem. If you are running actives, you are probably interested in a lower profile setup, so the low profile base vs. the stock Rycote base is preferred. YMMV and mine does.

One of the venues I frequent (Terminal West in Atlanta) has a balcony with iron railing you have to clamp from and there's no way to avoid your cables touching it. People love to kick and bang on it with their hands and it makes a low frequency rumble when the vibration transfers from the rail to the cable.

I only tried cable ties for this application once, but I probably didn't do it right. I usually just use them to keep everything neat and clean.

Depends.  Note that the Shapeways bars are plastic, and wouldn't be appropriate for a situation where they might see abuse.  Though I use them a lot, I personally wouldn't use them in a pro situation...for that I'd want something more robust.

Seconded.  I use the low profile base with my CM3s which are very vibration-sensitive, and I have never had cable vibration issues.

Whenever I have had shockmounts with integral clips, I never use them.  I prefer to tie off my cable several inches down the stand, with a large strain-relief loop.  If there were any vibrations traveling up the cable, they would be stopped at the tie-off point several inches below the shockmount.  The larger strain relief loop helps the shockmount do its job better as well, as you're not supporting any weight of the cable.

Are shapeways mounts really that fragile? If so I just blew $35.

If you are talking about SRS Recording Services specifically, then you have nothing to fear.  I find them to be very robust, particularly the new versions.  There are some strong naysayers, especially on GS Remote, who have never actually tried them.  The same is true for Scott's Rycote Lyre Mounting Base (https://www.ebay.com/itm/Mounting-Base-for-Rycote-Single-and-Duo-Lyres/132608698887?hash=item1ee0182a07:g:N-0AAOSwA3dYas5M).  High quality construction; derided by those with no experience with it.

My mics are not very expensive, but I would have no qualms about running SRS mounts with mics costing thousands each.

You should be fine if you're careful with them, but they definitely aren't as sturdy as some of the other options.

Shapeways mounts are NOT fragile!!

I do take care of my gear and I know that you do too.  I have a boatload of Shapeways mounts for the various mics in my locker and I have NEVER had a breakage issue with any of them.

is there a knock off shure doughnut style shock?   links & suggestions appreciated.   my shapeways mount is a little small for my current elastic based shockmounts.

I guess it's all relative, but I've seen at least one break without being abused.  It was one of the Schoeps active mounts, and those mounts have some pretty thin bits to them.

My opinion is that the Rycote Lyre style mounts are superior in every way.  They are particularly easy to use with these Shapeways bars.  They are worth every bit the price.

The easiest way to go is with a Rycote INV-6 (https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/554998-REG/Rycote_041106_INV_6_InVision_Indoor_Microphone.html).

If you're OCD like me and will be bothered by the fact that your mics will be off-center of the stand with one of those, and you don't need it to tilt, just get a pair of the standard 72-shore lyres (https://www.adorama.com/ry042271.html?gclid=EAIaIQobChMIxJaSoo7F2QIV0IKzCh0CEwLwEAYYASABEgJyvfD_BwE) and a SRS mounting base (https://www.ebay.com/itm/Mounting-Base-for-Rycote-Single-and-Duo-Lyres/132608698887).  This is exactly the setup I use with my SRS / Shapeways bars, and it comes out be the same price as an INV-6.

Yeah my Shapeways Schoeps actives DIN bar wont work with an A20s mount. But it’s perfect in a Shure donut. Is there any issue with running this way? I tape open like 3 times a year, don’t really want to kick down for a Rycote mount.

Ran my 4v vertically for the first time ever, the Shapeways Schoeps actives DIN Vertical bar was a champ. I ran it inside of a knockoff Shure donut for Cass McCombs. I had my small stand bungeed to a pillar about 20’ from stage, 10’ up. The floor is wooden, and there was some stomping before the encore. The floor always vibrates, but no issues with the donut/mount. Very happy with the Shapeways. And my $5 donut. 😂

It’s one show, but I also think the verticals sound better run vertically, as opposed to DIN in a DIN bar horizontally I use for stealth. Seems to be a more airy and open presentation. I rarely run open so opportunities are rare.

I'll say this once more an then I promise I'll STFU about it:

I went through several different cheap shockmounts.  Some are OK, like the cheap Schoeps A20 knockoff I used for a while.  None of them isolate anywhere near as well as the Rycote InVision mounts.  They are worth the investment, especially given the fact that the lyres are nearly impossible to break.  I know I sound like I am a paid spokesperson, but really I am a converted skeptic.

If you think Rycote is expensive, then check out Cinela...

You know, it’s a whole Nother game running full sized mics in a cheap mount. I’d never do that. But with just caps in a Shapeways I don’t think it matters much. First time out there could not have been more vibrations, yet no audio evidence of any at all.

Volt,

I agree with you 100% but I've also decided to STFU about this in this thread.  Shapeways & Rycote InVision mounts reign supreme for our purposes and they are most assuredly worth the modest investment for running active & full bodied mics, in my opinion...
