PS-2, AD-20, and MT-24/96 off a single external battery?
« on: January 09, 2006, 10:25:33 AM »
Is anyone running a PS-2, AD-20, and MT-24/96 off a single external battery? (Yes, I know that would require at least one inline voltage regulator.) Is this even a good idea?

Does anybody think that running multiple pieces of electronics on one battery might diminish performance of the electronics, even if the battery is capable of supporting the draw?  I believe a taxed ac line can affect sound quality.  I swear my stereo sounds best at 3 am when the power grid is in low demand.   ;D  I realize DC is not AC, but I've wondered.  It's fairly common to see in a rig.

i see no reason that all items cannot be run from one battery - one could even go so far as to use DC/DC converters to create a small power brick of multiple DC outs. i have run a small mixer from a dc/dc converter powered by a pair of 6v SLA's (for 12v > DC/DC device) and then run a D8 from one of the 6v's and an HHb on the 12v tap with one of my digi-disto boxes on the 12v tap as well.

BUT  one nice thing is that you can start using LiION batteries to replace SLA's. they come in all sorts of voltages and because they are so small and liteweight, one could haul two or three different voltages and still weigh less than one sla. that may make up for the "i'm so tired of lugging these d*mn SLA batteries around - one 12v, one 6v, blah blah" check the post after this one. i put up a ;ot of battery info.

btw, i use a LiION 14.8v to power my 671 and shure fp33 - lights on all the time, 48 phantom, headphones powered all the time -  in place of a 7lb SLA. the LiION weighs 10z and runs 8hrs. and is smaller than a paperback. recharge in ~4hrs

The downside to running multiple devices from a single power source:  the higher the current draw, the less relative run-time you'll achieve.  This is because the batteries we use are less efficient - to varying degrees based on the type of battery - in high draw situations.  However, the draw from each of those devices is relatively small, so running them all off a single battery shouldn't pose any problems.

In this case the MT is the highest draw, and also going to be regulated from 9 down to 5, so it sounds like I'm going to be better off running the MT off its own battery.
