Are ALDs useful any more?
« on: February 07, 2004, 12:00:27 AM »
Hello,

The ALD deivses use to show up on eBay every once  in a while.

I was plannin gon getting one early in 2002 but posters at teh boots newsgroups said that venues screw with the signal.  It was impossible to get a good recrding any more.

Are ALDs obsolete as taping devices?  I just checked eBay for the first time in years and they no longer pop up.

BTW, can anyone give a good example of their favorite ALd recording?  I hear about but never had the oppertunity to listen to the famous Springsteen ALD/audience mix of a few years ago.

Most venues will not turn on the ALD broadcast unless a house unit was actually checked out from the venue. So if you bring your own and intend to use it, you'll still have to let the venue know that you're using it for, uh, it's intended purpose.

Most people here will tell you that the signal sounds like crap.

But for bands that don't allow taping, eh, no harm, no foul. Right?

I have heard plenty of crap ones....where the signal wasnt coming in clear, or had significant drop outs in it...and the worst is in alot of cases, there was no bass...very tinny sounding...true there are some good ones out there, but the bad ones far out number them...

If you bring your own box, is that harming anyone? All you would be doing is picking up an FM frequency already in the air. No different from stealth taping a non-taping show as far as ethics are concerned, as long as you're bringing your own gear.

Taping a taper friendly band in this manner is another beast all together. Anything that jeapordizes a good standing taping policy should be avoided.
