Best Cable for UA5 > MD
« on: March 05, 2004, 10:01:41 AM »
Would this be my best bet or do I go for something else?

you need an optical cable, not a coax cable.

If your MD takes an optical input, check the pinned post in the Cables forum for links to some quality optical cables (though even the crap ones will work but may not be as durable).

Are you running an analog or digital connection UA5 > MD?

If analog*, just head down to Radio Shack and pick up a 2xRCA > 3.5mm stereo cable.

If digital, see my previous post.

* You'll achieve better results if you can record digital out of the UA5.  If you're going UA5 > MD with an analog signal, you're really doing the following:

UA5 analog input > UA5 ADC > UA5 DAC > MD ADC

Going through the UA5s ADC and then DAC process doesn't provide any benefits, and the MD ADC won't be as good as the UA5s ADC.  If you do want to run digital out of the UA5, you have several options: Nomad JB3, MD w/digital inputs, DAT.

what model do you have? almost all portable MD recorders have a mini input that doubles as analog and optical.
Line Audio CM4 / AT853Rx (c,h,o) / Studio Projects C4 MKII (c,h,o)
Sound Devices MP-2 / bm2p+ Edirol UA-5
Zoom F3 / F6 / Marantz Oade Warm Mod PMD661 / Tascam DR-70D

are you sure its a mt19 and not a mt190

the mt190 takes optical and i'm pretty sure thats what you have

the closest model numbers M20 and m25 are old school clunkers.

I was using a sharp MD-MT15 and I think you will be happy with it.  The UA-5 optical feed will work perfect for you.  I still have the deck and the instruction manual at home.  If you have any questions about the deck or if you need something from the manual, just PM me and I'll try to help you out.
