Topic: Audition 5.5 (OSX) output problem

I am running Audition 5.5 for Mac.

For awhile, I was using the USBPre2 as my headamp/DAC via USB; now I am using a Grace 902 via the toslink connector.

I have the default output on the system set to digital out.

I have the default output in Audition set to CoreAudio
Default Input - Built-in Input (only other choice is built-in mic; this doesn't change anything)
Default Output - Built-in Output (only option)
Master Clock: Built-in Output (other option is built-in input; doesn't seem to change anything)

I cannot get any files to play.  Everything works fine in all other audio programs, including Audacity.

When I go to "Audio Channel Mapping" this indicates that it still thinks the USBPre2 is the output, despite that not being selected in the "Audio Hardware" menu (and not even being an option). If I click the triangles to the right, and set it to "None", that doesn't seem to work.

I have tried restarting the system and powering down the system.  Doesn't do anything.

It is pretty infuriating at this point; I've used the USBPre2 before and never had this issue, so I'm not sure what is going on now.

Any ideas?  The Adobe help file was useless, also.

Are you getting light from the TOSlink?

Yes.  The toslink works fine. I get audio in every program but Audition. 

I have to say, I am pretty pissed that I paid for this thing, given how crappy the support is. I've been digging through Adobe's forums for an hour now and haven't found anything. 

Audition thinks the USBPre2 is still connected, despite that it's not even an option in the "Audio Hardware" menu and is not the selected output for the computer itself.

At this point the only solution I can think of is to reinstall it, which is annoying, but I guess the best option, unless anyone has other ideas. I would call Adobe, but apparently they charge $$$ for support even for a $500 program purchased less than a year ago...

I would call them and tell them you have the trial version and are thinking of buying the retail version but this issue came up and now you are not sure you want to buy.  They will most likely give you a few options over the phone at no charge to try to resolve the issue and get your business.  Worth a shot.

Of course, may not take more time than just uninstalling and reinstalling...

I had this exact problem happen twice with RX, it's created by using USB audio and then switching to the built-in out without switching the configuration first.

The first time I frigged with it because closing and opening it didn't do anything either, but the second time I paid more attention and did the following:

(with RX open and not sending audio, the usbpre2 in standalone mode)
1) re-plug the usbpre2 in usb mode.
2) Close RX
3) Restart machine (leave usbpre2 connected so it will reconnect on startup)
4) Open RX
5) switch settings in both RX and System preferences to send audio to the standard output (I can't remember if this is in the midi control or just in sound preferences)
6) Close RX
7) Pull the usbpre2 and put it in standalone mode
8.) Open RX and play something.

Essentially (in my case) there was a problem where it wouldn't flip back to another sound device until it saw the original device first and you set it manually and you can't set it to something else when the original selection is no longer valid. Yours may be a similar issue, maybe not, but it's worth a shot. Otherwise yes, I'd re-install it.

The only time I like usb audio is when I have a desktop that never gets put to sleep, otherwise I loathe it anymore.

Wave Editor has its own audio output selection that is toggled independently within the application not globally by the System Preferences it is found under: Wave Editor>Preferences>Output>Audio Output>Configure

Perhaps Adobe Audition has it's own output selector buried further in the application someplace???

I'm guessing this is what I have to do.  It's just odd that it seems to be only Audition that is finicky about the USB audio.

BTW, a re-install did NOT work. Despite uninstalling the previous version, apparently some sort of artifact remained in the computer to helpfully keep it screwed up. 

I will attempt this new method tonight...

yeah Audacity and RX do as well. (for better or worse)

I bet it didn't flush out the settings files (either .plist or other format) in your ~/Library/Application Support/ directory (and maybe somewhere in /Library/ as well).

I'm on PC so not sure if I can help at all.  I also run cs 5.5 though.  and I have run my USBPre2 also.  Again I gotta say PC warning.  I run a Lenovo and when I'm using AA if I even unplug the headphones of plug in something USb AA hits me with a pop up window about reconfiguring hardware.  At that point I either HAVE to go in and reset things or shut it down and restart it.  I gave a quick look at the preferences folder and I admit it seems you have doen everythgin you can.   One other "hiccup" for lack of a better word is that if I change me temp folder preferences they will NOT take effect until NEXT time I start up Adobe.  Since you are trying to take audio from your soundcard, is there any sort of computer menu option that you look at and see if it needs changing?  IE: something like use this sound card instead of stock one....assuming that it is an aftermarket soundcard on your mac.  Good luck
