Sony D50 32GB MS???
« on: August 03, 2011, 05:47:47 PM »
Has anyone successfully run a 32GB card in a Sony D50?  I have been using 16GB for years, but I might need more than 8 hours of 24/96 run time later this month.

I swore I saw an auction on ebay with a 32GB MS card included stating that it was the card they used - doesn't mean a whole lot

There was this post at the Nature recordist group:

Report: Sony 32GB pro duo HX card works fine.  With a set of Imedion 2400 mAh AAs I got 15 files on the D50 representing 15 1/2 hours of 24/96 run time, no operator intelligence input needed.

Well it won't solve the issue I raised (will the D50 firmware allow 32GB) but at $2.97 I ordered one of these toys too.  So next week I'll see if the D50 can use 64GB, though I'm pretty sure I'll never use that.  The notes on the seller's description are very interesting though.  He says that some versions of the PSP can only see 4GB and need a firmware upgrade to use greater capacity.  This is the problem of the D1, if a firmware upgrade were available or hackable for that I'd jump to be able to use that instead (battery life was also an issue, limited to 5-6 hours if I remember right).

I had ordered one of these adapters last month and it finally arrived on Tuesday. I tried it today in the D50 with two 16 GB micro SD cards.

It was accepted by the D50, and showed just under 15 1/2 hours recording time @ 24/96. I did a short recording and it played back alright.

I only have one 32 GB micro SD card but I tried it in one of the slots along with one of the 16 GB cards.

At first the D50 said "Unknown Media", but after I formatted, it accepted the card and showed 23 hours recording time @ 24/96!

Again, I did a short recording and it played back fine. Of course the definitive test will be to record for 23 hours.

Two 32 GB cards might work.

I got the adapter yesterday and tried two 32GB micro SDHC cards.  I formated in the D50 as the eBay auction specified, and it showed 30+ hours available, ran it overnight, had to change batteries after about 17 hours as it was flashing low (but I think it would have continued to run for another few hours based on the recharge of the 2400 mAh Imedion cells, which only took 1800 mAh of refill).  It keeps saying "UNKOWN MEDIA" everytime I start it up with this card, but if I ignore that and press play it reverts to normal.  I recorded about 28 hours of files, they spot-check out okay.

Not meaning to hijack this thread, but since there will be some D50 owners viewing this, you may want to know that the remote control for the Sony PCM-M10 works with the D50.
