Just picked up new D-50 - I am impressed
« on: September 01, 2011, 10:55:23 PM »
I am spoiled with high end pres, mics, etc.  Just picked up a Sony PCM-D50 while my Zaxcom Fusion 12 is in the shop, and I must say, I AM IMPRESSED!!!

Sounds great. Great features. Cost - $435 from B and H photo WITH $35 case.  It is a special now.  (who knows, maybe sony is releasing something else soon).

Can't wait to try it with the digital in with my Sound Devices USBpre2.  But as is, I am already impressed.

Just had to write this.

I do have a question - if I use the digital input from an SD USBpre2, I am assuming the digital clock accuracy is a little better on the USBPRE2.
Will the Sony automatically use the digital clock of the incoming digital signal?  Or does it only use its internal clock.
I don't know if the sync function in the menu relates to this.
I could not find an internal versus external clock setting.

THANKS,
AB

The D50 is a great deck, congratulations!

People on ts.com always are saying the M10 is the best handheld out there.  They must have small hands or something, but they're overlooking the D50 -- my vote for best handheld deck for sure.

Anyway, the D50 using a optical digital input will use the clock of the sending device. All well-executed designs (and most decks) will do this -- otherwise the recording deck would be re-sampling the digital input and the recording would not be a bit-perfect copy of what is being sent.  The D50 is bit perfect, and uses the clocking of the incoming digital signal.
Mics: Microtech Gefell m20/m21 (nbob/pfa actives), Line Audio CM3, Church CA-11 cards
Preamp:  none <sniff>
Recorders:  Sound Devices MixPre-6, Sony PCM-M10, Zoom H4nPro

Thanks Todd.  That is very good news.  By the way - I have a pair of Beyerdynamic 950s as well.  I LOVE THEM!!
I got one of the greatest Zarb (persian drum that is hard to record) recordings with them.
Best,
AB
