Title: v-2 or sd mp2
Post by: waltmon on January 23, 2014, 01:29:44 PM
Any thoughts? I always liked my Nuemanns with my v-2...just curious if/what the consensus is...im pretty sure they are different pres in the mp2 than the 744t...

When I first decided to get an external pre I was torn between a MP2 and a V2.  I went with a V2 and have been a very happy man as a result, but everybody has their own likes and dislikes of a particular unit.

What recorder would you ultimately be using? These are both great devices, but I think it's debatable if either one offers a benefit above and beyond most of the phantom powered recording devices available today.

The MP2 is a great little device if you're using a handheld recorder (i.e. the M10) and need phantom power or 3.5mm out. Functionally, it's still one of the very best units out there; easy to power and incredibly small. Sonically, I would characterize it as "warm" and maybe a bit less detailed than most most pres. Not sure I'll say anything more than that... I'd certainly love to have one in toolkit, but it would only get used for certain niche functions.

The V2 is considerably less convenient, but then again who doesn't love a good V2 tape? Its clean/transparent sound is legendary, but (continuing with the theme I'm trying to make) I'm not sure that it's a notch up from any of the better recorders you can buy today.

I have a V2 and a V3.  I have never owned any Sound Devices equipment.  One thing to consider is service if something needs repair.  I can say from experience that Grace Designs is top notch in my opinion.  Obviously I have no experience with Sound Devices service.  Just my 2 cents.

Both are a good choice and offer excellent service. Compare the feature sets of each unit with the recorder you'll be using or may move to if thinking ahead.

MixPre-D was the ultimate match for me.

I ran 184s, 150s, 140s, and U89s > V2 > ad2k > pro dats and 744t with killer results...I was just curious what the consensus was...this is going to a Busman mod r4...mostly when I run matrix with a board. Im gonna run just the r4 when space is an issue.

I always liked Neumann>V2. I think the Neumann>SD MP2 would be a lil too much flavor and warmth, but thats just my opinion and from what Ive heard over the years! I have run just about EVERY portable preamp out there, and I still think the Naiant with Output Transformers is DEF in my top 3 preamps Ive used ;) And you cant beat the price and size! I have ran it with MBHO Cards/Hypers and Schoeps Cards/Supercards and I think its a killer match with those two mics. Guess youll just have to see what you want out of your mics, whether it be warmth or detail!

For ease of use tho, you could always get a MOD 661 or something like that too, if you like the transparency/detail of your mics!

I have had both a V2 and MP-2.  Unless you are trying to put together a 'small' rig, I would use a v2.  That being said, I had a friend that ran 184> MP2> SBM-1 for years and loved it.

I've never owned a V2 but I will someday.  I love the soundstage on the V2.  That said, I like the MP-2 because I dig the transformer sound.  Heck, all 3 of my preamps have transformers.   Any hoot, you can't go wrong with either of them.  The companies that make them offer top notch customer service.  It really comes down to what flavor you like.  Not whether one flavor is better than the other.   ;)

+1
I was also shopping for a V3 (because of the digital out). I chose the MixPre-D because of the option for internal batteries (I carry AA for my 661 never hurts to have spares). The MixPre also has a USB port (I have never used it though for recording because I gave up laptop recordings).

the MP-2 and V2 have entirely different sounds to them.  I have an MP-2 and a V3(some would say the V2 & V3 have slightly different sound) along with the USBPre-2.  The MP-2 has it's own unique flavor that for my tastes does not mix well with some mics.  If I were choosing between the two units I would need to factor in what I plan on doing with the preamp.  There are times that the MP-2 pairs better with a certian mic.  for overall flexibility and being able to be used with anything, the Grace Design gear is pretty transparent sounding.  MP-2 has advantage of size and on board battery.  Nice small size too.  Good meters on both units.  Both are pretty bullet proof and will last years under heavy use.
