Title: PC users Foobar Live Show Tagger Tutorial!!
Post by: Gordon on November 19, 2019, 03:05:56 PM
I put this together for folks on the FB group and it needs to be posted here as well!

https://youtu.be/PeGgrtpjwqo (https://youtu.be/PeGgrtpjwqo)

Here is a link to a pdf of the text instructions (same text as what is in video).

Sometimes due to file name and/or textfile issues the tagger does not work correctly and names all songs the same (from track one usually).  If the text file is the problem then fix it and try again.  If file names are the issue then it's easy to fix with masstager scripts.

Ya know, not learning how to tag files sooner (I just started doing it in the last year) is one of the dumbest things I ever did in my taping career.
Thanks for this.

Thanks...this is something I've been meaning to do but haven't gotten around to it yet.

I've found that to number and tag the files using Foobar2000 after I'm done processing takes me about a whole extra minute.

Excellent video. It really frustrates me when files aren't tagged. It takes 1 minute.

Even worse is a non e-tree text file.

The only thing I would add is to tag your files with the equipment used to record the show. I put it in the Comments field (which generally isn't something that you see when you play back files). That way if the files get re-shared without a text file (or if some idiot tries to pass it off as something it isn't, which I've seen), you can still tell what the equipment used was (unless that idiot is smart enough to find those tags and change them).

I add a custom field for source and another for "recorded by" but I didn't want to confuse the noobs too much!

After trying and failing with the Foobar LSTagger, I have been tagging files individually.
This will be my weekend homework.
Thanks, G.

Maybe more newb will flake off and I will figure out the custom fields too: who knows!  The weekend is young!

custom fields = right click the files > properties > tools > add new field.  then create whatever you want.  I have one for source and recorded by.  I honestly never thought to use the comments section.  Only problem I see with that is if you have a * for say guest info or something like that it gets put in comments.

On topic: I am glad folks are learning to tag. Metadata is important for your digital stuff.
Less on topic, but relevant: Mac users can use xACT by our own Scott Brown to do much of the same thing: http://xact.scottcbrown.org

it does for me!  if it's a new install of foobar you need to go to file > preferences >display > context menu > tagging then check box for remove tags from files.

Got it.  Foobar is a lot deeper than it appears.  I haven't changed much with it, so little things like this help.  Thanks!

for xACT, is there a way to pull info straight from the text file? i couldnt seem to find it. all i see is copy/paste the song titles, which also then brings in the track #.

I thought xACT would pull the info from the text file just like Live Show Tagger, but I'm not a Mac user so the info is just what I've read/heard.

YES there is and it's kind of hidden, so I can't blame anyone for not finding it.
Open up xACT and select the 'TAGS' tab from the top row, and add your files.
Click the little check box for AUTO NAME and a window will open called Track Name Input.
NOW there is a new set of options under the FILE menu at the top, including one to import a cue sheet and one to import titles from a text file. (Command-shift L)
Depending on the format of the file, it might append some junk to the end, so be sure to double check the list before you click the WRITE TAGS button. You can click WRITE EMPTY TAGS if you need to erase a tag. I like to un-tag unknown song titles (if any) after I tag from a list.

morst - excellent find!! worked perfectly, thanks for directing me there.

while i'm at it, any recommendations for software on the mac to split concerts and create a cue file?  i'm using audacity for tracking right now, but it doesnt allow me to create a cue file then.

I tried using xACT's cue sheet function, which is under the shntool tab, as "cue"

... but I think cue files only work for 16/44.1, which rarely helps me with current projects.
