Title: MixPre 10 II Power Options???
Post by: dueling on July 09, 2022, 05:03:24 PM
I am sure it's out there but I cannot find the MixPre 10 II power options thread.  Can someone please direct me there? My MP10 will only power up with the wall plug. I thought it powered up by USB-C?  Thank you!

You can only power it with the Hirose connector and/or battery sled.  It doesn't power with the usbc like the Mixpre 3/6.  IMO the hirose is a much better option and more secure.

How long will the battery sled give me in the field running 6 channels?  Any idea?  and is there a portable Hirose battery option?  Thanks!

I don't think you would get more that 2 hours with the AA sled with more than 2 channels.  Order a Hirose > M tip battery cable from Ted.  Then you can buy a talent cell or Max Oak battery depending on your powering needs.

Where can I get in touch with Ted?  Also, I'd like this thing to be able to power 6 channels and run for a pretty long time.  Battery pack suggestions?  The larger one below? Thank you for your help!!!

Here is Ted He can get a cable sorted!

https://taperssection.com/index.php?topic=133186.0

I would do the Max Oak battery if you are running 6 channels!  That will cover you.

Whoa...I use a MixPre-6 running phantom on 4 channels with full brightness, and I power that with a little $25 Anker 10,000mah battery for hours. The MaxOak linked above is a $130  50,000mAh. Seems like mega overkill in terms of mah for concerts (even with the MP10's extra channels), no?

Awesome.. Thank you!!!

The Mixpre 10 doesn't use usbc for power!  It needs at least 12v.  So for 6 channels it will work great.  I used mine for 12 hours a day only running 2 channels at a festival and it used half the battery power.  I'd rather have the extra power and not need it then need it and not have it.

I'm not exactly sure on run-time since I'm also using the L-Series Battery mount:

https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1333782-REG/sound_devices_mx_lmount_battery_sled_holds_2.html (https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1333782-REG/sound_devices_mx_lmount_battery_sled_holds_2.html)

Using 2 of the F960/970 @ 7.4V 87mAh 64.5Wh batteries.

The last time I recharged, only down two bars on the Juice Box. About 1 day @ a festival.

I am testing out a run of all 6 channels with the MAXOAK battery.   35 mins in so far at 32bit float / 48 and the battery has not flintched.  Are there any out there that aren't so big and heavy, but still have great run times?  Thanks again for the tip!!!

What about this one?   https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07P87JTVT

You can only power it with the Hirose connector and/or battery sled.  It doesn't power with the usbc like the Mixpre 3/6.  IMO the hirose is a much better option and more secure.

I am sure it's out there but I cannot find the MixPre 10 II power options thread.  Can someone please direct me there? My MP10 will only power up with the wall plug. I thought it powered up by USB-C?  Thank you!

You could get the Talentcell battery I linked!  It is smaller and lighter.  You aren't going to get as long of run times with 6 channels of p48, but a solid battery for normal shows. I have one as a backup.  I've never used the battery you linked, but it should work.

Awesome. Yeah, I don't tape festivals. Just looking to tape maybe an opening band, and then two maybe three set shows, max.  Charge overnight and tape again the next night kind of deal.  Not looking to go all day.  Will the Talentcell get me through what I'm looking for?  Thank you!

Just a heads up, I just did a test run and got around 6 hours, running 6 channels, using this cable and a J-Go Tanker Power Bank via USB-C > Hirose.

For a MixPre-10 II, doesn't the Sound Devices MX-HIROSE  [ https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1552856-REG/sound_devices_mx_hirose_hirose_dc_input_sled.html ] require 10-20V?
Some of the batteries being suggested run at 9v.

Is there a RAV Power battery that is high capacity AND you can set the voltage? I would prefer a battery running the exact voltage you want...

^^ Beware that some users have reported that the builtin Hirose connector on the MP10 is more fragile (mainly because it sticks out oddly when plugged to a hirose plug) than a sled with hirose. I have an extra hirose sled that someone made...if you solder at all, and have a sled you're not using, then it's easy to make a regular sled into a hirose sled.

That said, I would personally run the builtin hirose connector, PLUS some AA batteries as backup. That's one of the great things about the mixpre series is that you can always have a backup power source.

That Hirose connector was a major factor in me sending mine back and sticking with the MixPre6. I found it very fiddly, and was afraid it would be the first thing to go. I’ll just have to use two decks and live without the 2 extra ISOs.

I've had my 10 for a few years and haven't had an issue with the Hirose!

That’s good to hear as I really liked having 8 ISOs. I’m just wary having had bad luck with various ports over the years not supporting sufficient wear and tear. It would suck to have that go and render the device useless, at that price point.

We have two 722s since they were new, and a MixPre10T and 10-II and have never had a problem with the Hirose connector, other than one factory adapter for a 722 with a poor wire prep job at the strain relief.

Replacing a Hirose in a MixPre10 would be trivial if you wanted to DIY and could find the part. It does stick out to the side and you cannot sit the 10 on it's back with the stock sled, but you would really have to abuse it to break it IMO.

^^ Cool pic of the MixPre guts. Is the hirose epoxied in or just screwed on?  It's actually great to know this is replaceable. Anyone know where to find the right hirose connector? I know of a MP-10 in need of one...

Edit: maybe its a Hirose HR10A-7R-4S? Or one of the Hirose parts below? They seem to make a ton of variations, many of which are obsolete and unavailable...

The Hirose just looked held in by the big nut. I don't know what's available to buy, that is a problem. SD must be able to get them, or they have a ton of NOS. Seems odd that they and others would continue to use the Hirose if unavailable.

This is definitely still available and a common part from electronic supply houses. Hirose #HR10A-7R-4S.

I've been running my MixPre-10T with one of these Krisdonia LiPos (via custom hirose cable), and it's been a solid workhorse! Both, slip perfectly into a Sachtler SN607 (small) Lightweight Audio Bag. BTW, I also always use the provided 8AA sled with IKEA brand LADDA rechargeables, as a backup...

Their smaller capacity model is TSA ok, so if you ever fly with your gear, opt for the smaller beast:

Highly recommend! I've used Anker and RAVPower products in the past, and these are just as reliable

Anyone try one of these with d-tap to hirose?  There are several options available and all seem smaller and lighter than the Krisdonia batteries.

What is the connector on your custom hirose cable to the Krisdonia? I ordered a Hirose to USB-C cable and was wondering if it could power my MixPre 10 II from the Krisdonia USB-C output at 12V.

I believe it's an m-tip on the battery output end. Built meticulously by Ted G. I run mine at 16V (always multiple  P48 pairs) and it's never failed

Thanks for that info. Does the m-tip plug go into the “DC-OUT” on the Krisdonia?

Thanks again. It seems like this Hirose to USB-C may not be a good idea.

You can order a Hirose to 2.1 tip (m tip) cable on amazon!  They are around $25ish.

I used that same hirose cable for my SD 442. It was surprisingly well built.

I wanted to give an update on the excellent advice I received here. I got the Krisdonia 25000 mAh Power Bank thanks to SOS and the power cable thanks to jbell.

Tested both today with my MixPre-10 II. Two mics P48 on two tracks (no mix tracks) at 24/192 and got almost exactly 5 hours recording time.

I may have gotten more time if I'd removed the USB backup drive for the test. I don't know how much drain the additional writing mght be.

I had one question for SOS about his Krisdonia. Does the Display ever turn off? After I first charged the unit, the bright green display came on and has stayed lit ever since.

I've tried all ways of pushing and holding the power button but it won't turn off.

Anyway, thanks again for your help.

2023-07-20 UPDATE: It turned out my first Krisdonia unit was faulty. After replacement, I got just over 9 hours recording time with the same setup as above, but without the USB backup drive.
