DIN vs. DINa BAR for CK61 (and sometimes CK63)
« on: May 28, 2013, 12:18:08 PM »
I know this is often asked but I can't find a definitive answer for this.

I've recently picked up a set of AKG Actives and purchased a pair of CK61 (card) capsules to go with them.  I'll likely hat mount a lot of the time but there will be instances where I can run open.  In that case, I'm picking up a DIN bar for the CK61's as I own them.   Most of the "open" shows I go to will be outdoors and the mic will be placed at the board a good distance back (80-100').   Sometimes, however, I will have access to CK63 (hypercards) and will run those.  Would I be doing a huge disservice by buying only a DIN bar if I'm going to run DINa maybe 10% of the time (if not less since I'd have to borrow those CK63 caps).  Or should I suck it up and buy a DINa bar as well?

Thanks to anybody who can help answer this.

if you want, you can make a diy project for $5 and have both
or just diy for one and buy the other
see my thread in rig pictures if you like

I have no expertise in the science behind it as some others do, but my totally layman opinion is, no, I would not sweat having just a DIN bar.

I personally don't even begin to consider the stereo recording angle when setting up mics.  I run CK63s a lot now that I have them and use a DIY made little mount that is around DIN or DINa.

Also, I know the whole standard configs are obviously common practice, we all use them, they work, its easy, but I'm sure the more technical guys will tell you a fixed pattern is really not at all the way to go.

And even so, the difference between DIN and DINa is so small I highly doubt you'll hear any difference in recording a PA unless you're really concentrating on placement in the room and working with a sophisticated playback system at home.

or just use a vark bar like I do

This, however I'd recommend Rycotes for the added shock protection. The flexibility of this rig will teach you how to run in any situation, so long as you take careful notes on your angle and spacing.

Thanks guys for the responses.   Looks like I'll stick with the plan of picking and picked up a DIN bar for now.  If I pick up CK63's of my own down the road, I might just grab another bar for those just to have it.

I would say just the DIN bar would be fine for what you do and as little as you openly record!
